Personally, I would walk away mate.
The 2.2 petrol is unfortunately the most unreliable engined variety of our great cars, and it sounds like this one is a no no.
I suppose if you had money to spend on it, and were inclined to want to strip the engine out, then on you go.
But where do you stop?
I would hold on and keep looking mate.

My opinion...WALK AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN! They're the weak link in the Frontera rand and VERY well known for head gasket failure...even if recently been done! I honestly believe VX should never have wasted their time fitting this engine to the Fronty.

A knock in the engine in one of those is WOW!! and bye bye...

If you have a lot of spare time on your hands and you don't mind a lot of hassle, then it might be an uninteresting project not to take on.

I had a similar knocking on my 2.2 right after the oil pump failed!
This resulted in a £900 complete engine rebuild. If you were looking for a car to buy and fix then dont pay more than about £2-300 for it.. But as you said that you are not a mechanic (or hobbyest mechanic), I would walk away.

Mine was a project, since I finished it, it's been great.. ( except for when I break it again )

Walk away, wait don't walk, run. Sound like an expensive repair. Plenty of others around for the same money that are trouble free.
