new engine after 3 offroading days....well guys after changing the exhaust on my fronty and finally solving the running probems i had its finally giving up the ghost, still drivabe and running ok but really leaking oil after going through a few swamps at hillnditch cheshire last sunday, replaced the sump gasket what a nightmare that was having to remove the diff etc.... 8 hours later fired it up and guess what...... still leaking, took the timing belt off and found that it was the crank seal front and back leaking so now im going take the engine out this weekend and completely overhaul it, new seals, crank regrind and head gasket so i know when im driving it nothing can fail on me, i can get a new engine for £100 so any ideas whats best option? im thinking the engine ive got i know is strong other than the seals, either way the engines got come out ideas please guys.....
Re: new engine after 3 offroading days....Do you know the history of the engine for £100 ?
Re: new engine after 3 offroading days....all i know is 79k miles and running sweet when taken out of a fronty 12 months ago and dry stored since cabelt changed at 64k, going have a proper look at it tomorrow to check it over
Re: new engine after 3 offroading days....Hmm, might be tempted to fix yours mate if you are happy everything else other than the seals are good on it.
Re: new engine after 3 offroading days....What's the saying - better the devil you know
Would it be worth while doing a compression test just as a peace of mind/indication of the condition of the chambers to help you make a decision. If they are good on your existing engine you would know it's worth doing the required work rather than taking a risk on an unknown engine.
Re: new engine after 3 offroading days....Your engine blew the oil seals for a reason and then the gasket went. I would check the oil pump while your rebuilding it aswell something not right.

Re: new engine after 3 offroading days....hi, the head gasket hasnt gone but as a precausion i was going chnge the gasket anyway, yeh i agree the seals have gone for a reason but im putting it down to doing 103000 miles and been ragged offroad for roughly 36 hours of use and then driven 150 mile round trip to and from the stoke events, ive techincally rebuilt the engine other than the hea gasket and seals, i get no smoke on start up but when running it is starting to sound like a diesel so maybe a new cam and oil pump will be going into the old engine aswell as crank seals, im going to the scrappy today to check the condition of that other engine and then i will price up the parts for my engine, i know its a great engine, pulls very well but drinks fuel, cost £56 the other day to do 189 miles on a run
Re: new engine after 3 offroading days....if you've had it low on oil pressure you will most likely have damaged the crank block and head
Re: new engine after 3 offroading days....Both... chuck the 100 beer tokens at the other engine and stick that in the truck (assuming it works that is) you will then have a working truck back, then do a full re-build on the original engine in slow time as and when funds allow. Once done stick it back in and either put the other one in the shed for a rainy day (or the next frontie with a knacked engine to come up on flea bay) or just stick it on flea bay for 200 quid.
This posting may have been helpfull, on the other hand probably not... Either way, I may have had drink when posting it in which case it's probably not as helpfull as it could have been
Work safe, and remember all technical problems can be resolved with a hammer, the trick is knowing where to hit it and how big a hammer to use (I often find it may also help to have a spare bit in the shed to replace the bit you have just mullered Work in Progress (or not as the case may be) I give you.... Re: new engine after 3 offroading days....good plan was going to do that if i got away with just throwing a belt on mine
Re: new engine after 3 offroading days....100 quid is cheap i paid 250 for mine from scrapy told me he wudnt budge cos it was his mates and he new it was a gooden??? so after a month oil light flickers on tick over till i give it a bit of rev and yes theres oil in it ,,,so i wud say its worth a 100 all day
AKA..paulmac65 or maca even me mrs calls me that...MACA4X4
Re: new engine after 3 offroading days....Hot engines and swamps don't mix well, the shock of cold water can pop seals. The £100 engine will get you running again and provide lots of spares, so must be worth a punt.

Re: new engine after 3 offroading days....Check your breathers aren't blocked with swamp as well. That can cause the over pressure in the engine causng bust crank seals.
