Insurance What?!

Postby Woodie22 on Tue Aug 02, 2011 10:06 pm

After heading to kimpton to try some greenlanes yesterday (loved it), i realised by the time i made it back home to toddington i had used roughly £15-20 worth of fuel for the trip to kimpton, down a few lanes and back to toddington with a few stops on the way.
I know the little 2l sports are thirsty but damn, i had been debating a diesel anyway but that kinda pushed me more towards getting 1. However after checking out some small diesel 2.2l fronteras on compare the market my insurance would be just under £3000.

im paying abit under £2000 atm which for a first car n given my age i guess is "reasonable". but £3000 im not really understanding wtf has happened?!?

out of curiousity i put my fronty into compare the market to see wt my quotes would be.. cheapest: £2400 which is crazy.
I checked my fronty's quotes if i had 1 year no claims under my belt, 1 year driving experience and i was a year older.. £2000

my mind is completely boggled by these quotes, not only the outrageous prices that make me understand 100% why ppl drive around uninsured at my age but im boggled n bleep that in a year even if i drive safe as i have been n get my no claims ect ect.. my insurance will still be £2000.

As far as I'm aware all A series Frontera's are group 10 insurance so I wouldn't think engine size mattered.

I just ran my details through 'Compare the Market' and the best they gave me was £664
That was Full Comp, 0% NCD, with commuting, I'm 39, use of company vehicle, additional driver added, 7000mile limit etc, etc, etc,.

So how come I pay £215.00 per year else where :!: . Ok I didn't declare my mods, but when I did it says £8,373.16

So, todays lesson is, it pays to shop around, and that comparison sites are not always the best option.

Try some brokers like Adrian Flux, & Sureterm Direct. mention FOG (after they've quoted you) and you should get extra discount too. Maybe some other members can suggest places for younger drivers to get a good deal?
Personally when I was your age I found brokers allways got me the best price. There will be a few in your high street, so why not pop in and talk to them. I think you'll be pleasently surprised.

Noel Dazely gave me a good price recently, not much more than I would have paid with Frank Pickles before they decided to be rubbish and stop doing 4x4 insurance. Sadly the quote came through too late for me to take advantage of it so I ended up with flux.

You should bear in mind though that while the specialist brokers will give you a good price on a policy that includes cover for off roading and modifications they will often not offer any kind of no claims bonus which is fine if you stick with the 4x4 but not so good if you want to insure something else. You will also find those of us who are getting the really low prices are doing so because our trucks are classed as second vehicles.

Your best bet might be a more 'mainstream' brokers like Adrian Flux who could potentially still give you a good price with all the off road extras but with a more 'regular' policy.

Either way your age and experiene are inevetably going to count against you I'm afraid, but you'll be surprised how fast it starts to come down so long as you can avoid accidents and speeding tickets.

Haya mate, Im 21, have a '99 B 2.2dti LWB and sadly now only 1 yrs NCB, but 4 years driving exp. In april I got a quote from flux for about £800....I called them up and they asked how my neighbours long lost brother's dog was  and after I had told them about my mods (lift, bigger tyres, roof lights ect), added break down cover ect they said it would be about £1000 (or just under (works out at about £100 a month)). That was still the best quote I had gotten, even without the mods declared....

Then they said that I had unlimited milege allowance, somthing like 60days insurance in the EU, AND I can drive other peoples cars (a massive bonus for me because I can now drive my familys cars too :) ) ect....so I bit there arm off!! I would defo have to recommend adrian flux!!!

hmm i shall have a look around at these adrian flux and other less mainstream insurers, i reckon ill just stay with 4x4's in general.. theres only a few cars that i like n when i look at the price of most nice cars i just think "imagine wt kind of 4x4 i could get with that money".

after discussing my trip to kimpton with my driving instructor during a pass plus lesson he said that the fuel wasnt too bad for the distance of the trip and greenlanes included. also discussed instead of buying a whole new diesel fronty which ive heard have some problems at lower litre that LPG could be a better solution or just man up n pay for petrol.

Im guessing your sisters fella is older but from my experience its practically impossible to get insured on anything 2.0l + until your 21 unless your willing to pay 4k+ n i think the word turbo adds an extra £1k even if its turbo diesel

Insurance is about using your head.

Changing your job "description" helps a lot :)

But by far the biggest BIGGEST mistake people make when dealing with older vehicles is to not go down the "classic" route.

Insure your fronty as a classic, and see the difference it makes on price :)

Also declare it as a second car.
