Alternative to 2.2 DTI ? , 2.5 diesel opinions please

Lo all, as per my hello post , currently I'm seriosly considering a 2.2 DTI 1999 or 2000.

Baring in mind this would be hobby and winter 3rd car but I still want fuel economy for trips to dog shws etc, can someone tell me how the fuel consumption and performance/general drive compare between an older 2.5 model and the 2.2 in the 'real world'. Yes I've Googled it but I prefer real experiences.

I have noticed that I could pick up 2.5 quite a bit cheeper but if spending 2,000 on a 2.2 DTI is the only sensible option then so be it , however I like a few cars and so dont want my winter/hobby car to take up too much cash.

well my 2.5 will do 30mpg round town if i take it easy,on a long trip to cornwall it was still giving me 30mpg towing a caravan,the 2.2dti from i hear will do around 35mpg which is much better,but its a b series and i would rather have a freelander than a b series

i just dont like the shape,the A series has more presence if you know what i mean,also i have seen more rot on some b series than a 94 model leafer

I much prefer the A series shape they look a bit more rugged, and ideally with the A series dash in my 2.5 as I like the flat shelf (to put things on)and think the clunky buttons for the lights etc are so funny.
My opinions of my 2.5 are as follows.
Its quick off the mark but flattens off a bit after 2000 revs but still pulls steadily.
Its got a series 15 inch pepperpot alloys(which I like) on which stick out a bit from the arches and this has the effect of covering the side of the car with any mud I go through which of course I like but am thinking about steel rims and camac terras if I can find a set reasonably priced.
It does 32 mpg round town solo driven carefully but only on Shell diesel. This is an improvement on 30mpg using Tesco diesel.It does more on a long run if I stay at 50mph.
Its dark green slightly metallic (standard frontera green) which I like.
I have a 2.3 which I was very happy with and can only compare it with the 2.5.If my friend hadn't crashed it I would have been happy for as long as it was good to fix but do like the 2.5 as it is much quicker and more powerful and ...has a great heater.
Rifleman gets 38mpg out of his 2.5 of which I am very jealous.
It has a computer in it under the passenger footwell and the thing that can go wrong with them is something to do with the no1 injector,but dont quote me there are far more knowledgeable chaps on here.

My 97 R'reg 2.5tds lwb does 400mls to a full tank (give or take a few mls).
I don't do straight runs any longer than 15mls in top gear and no less than 4mls thru town up and down thru 1st/2nd/3rd gears on most days, so a good mix in there for you.. fuel has gone up as we all know (Grrr), and now i think its around £110 to fill up, sure its an 80ltr tank.
