Daihatsu Fourtrak

Hi guys, yep I know its an alien motor in the title but a mate has such a car, diesel with auto lock hubs. Was wondering if any of you have knowledge of these machines in order I may give him advice. The problem first appeared 1 year ago when, in 2wd, the car would make a clicking sound when cornering at low speed. Having limited mechanical knowledge he suspected cv joint on front axle but garage he took car to reported back it was gearbox mountings working loose. He had them fix the car but one year on, the sound has returned. Underneath all bolts are tight and no play in prop shafts however they are very lacking in lubrication (something he is now putting right). Anyone got suggestions as what may be wrong? Many thanks. David.

Admin, is this thread in correct file as a non-Frontera motor?

Have had a few die-laughing's myself...good little truck and a toughey except for the transfer boxes...

Deffo sounds to me like cv joints that are clicking...which would then imply that your auto lock hubs arent disengaging properly as when cornering in 2wd the hubs should be unlocked and the cv joints then not turning... :?
Whip the caps of the hubs, check the circlips havent fallen off...failing that carefully remove, clean, lube and refit the hubs...
Remenber to reverse up in 2wd to disengage in the hubs when you have been using 4wd...

Cv's are available from milners or loads of places on the web...

Dont worry if they click a bit...mine did for years and never failed...infact the axles I kept off it are now on my mate Louis 4trak and still going with the same clicky cv's and he proper punishes it!
Check out the index thread below where pics/reviews from all our past meets can be found!!!!

Looks like I'm in trouble with the Mrs's again...
She asked me what I'd most like to do to her body...
Apparently "Identify it" is not the correct answer!

Thanks Greg, reassurring for him as he's on a budget. Now it transpires he was using the hi-lo transfer lever thinking that was the only method of engaging 4wd. Explained to him the dash switch engages 4wd in high 4wd, he now rrealises why his mpg was way worse when using 4wd(lo), additionally, as his Mrs pointed out, the light in the 4wd switch was gubbed so there was no way of telling if the car was in 4wd hi or 2wd hi other than "the steerings very heavy sometimes so I press the button"! He's going to lube the uj's and have the cvj's looked at.
Many thanks. David.
