Evening all.
Just wanted to pick up on Greg's point about selecting 4wd on the move. Can I just check my understanding (or lack there of) by asking for your comments on how I think the 4wd system on an A works:
- Whilst moving without the front hubs engaged, the front diff and hence prop shaft will be stationary (or as good as) regardless of the speed of the road wheels. Thus would trying to engage 4wd on the move will result in accelerating the whole lot up to speed very quickly, hence potentially getting a nice crunchy soundtrack and causing damage?
- With the front hubs locked but in 2wd the front diff and thus prop shaft should be turning at a similar rate to the rear, just not being driven by the transfer box, but rather by the wheels. So if this is the case, then in theory you should be able to move in and out of 4wd at reasonable speeds without causing too much trouble?
Cheers, and sorry to waffle on. I just like to try and understand the mechanics behind what's going on...
