engine swop

i have a 2.2 16v lwb transglobe from 98 .Its starting to knock should i flog it or swop the engine? If i do swop the engine do i swop it with one exactly the same or do i have options Cheers Ben

had the same, turned out it was a big end gone (on its way out), rebuild cost was about £400 for a complete overhaul (rings valves etc) + my time. Essentially I now have a brand new engine...

As these engines are quite hard to come by in a good condition, a second hand one is possibly a no no.

So I would consider flogging it if you dont want to go down the rebuild option.

Unfortunately, these where the worst engine fitted to the frontera's, possible the worst engine vauxhall ever made.

They are prone to bottom end wear and even chucking conrods though the side of the block !!!!

bugger!! such a shame , it pulls like a train at the moment its only at 2400rpm when warm you can tell something doesn't sound right . still not sure what to do

maybe i'll ask for advice on the landrover forum, they may not slate my engine so much :lol:

A lot of the 2.2's issue's tend to stem from premeture componant failure. :shock:

The oil pump is a notorius week spot and has probably worn and is no longer doing it's job properly which has probably contributed to your bottom end knock.

The majority of the 2.2's issues can be avoided if you change the Oil & Water Pumps every 3-4 yrs along with the Cam Belt and make sure that anti freeze / coolant is drained, flushed & refilled every 2yrs. Some times spending a few quid on additional maintenance can save you big bucks further down the road....

im not sure the engines that bad but after talking to mechanics etc they believe the problems could be caused by vx fitting the lump so its slightly tilted towards the rear end in a fronty rather than dead flat as it was probably designed to be used.
in the nearly 2 years ive been a member of fog ive noticed that the majority of times when a head gasket fails which they often do in the 2.2 its normally the rear end cylinder that goes so there must be something in it
