trying to think what it would be called
like a solenoid but that was more controllable, so its motor that pushes out/pulls in but it has to be adjustable, possible via a dial

think you got ur name but do you mean something like a headlight adjuster, as they are adjustable and go in and out,
2.3 td lwb died in spectacular style when all liquids in engine bay ended up in the sump....
