Hot and cold for limited DIY nut removeal applications

Talking to my younger bro over the weekend about Hot and Cold treatment on rusted on nuts and bolts and him being a plumber person suggested that I could use MAPP Gas torch, apprarently comes with a yellow gas bottle, and then a product that Locktite sale that as a cold vapour application that then as a penetrating oil action that shocks into the rusted metal.
He says the MAPP gas will no way reach the temperature of the oxy-asceline, but will get up to about 300 degrees.
Going to try and see labels on bottles of the products that he is talking about, but in the meantime, as anybody else got any suggesstions on other products that the limited DIY person could use for assistance in undoing rusted on nuts and bolts?

im in the same boat as you mate. i had same issue with shocker bolts i forgot about them again till you said.

Depends what an where bolts are breaker bar give you more levarage, home base black n decker grinder £25 grind the nuts an bolts an replace them but make sure they can be replaced first i`e the tank guard bolts or bullbars n side steps canny be bought in b&q or most diy shops cause of the type of thread as i found out an had to get old one on here. Dw40 soak an spray for a few days doesnt always work someone suggested a product an i cannot rember the name or burning gear which i dont have an most people do not have handy so maybe as k a local garage to loosen them

Bumptj and me once used a plumbers blow torch and shock and release spray on my old ball joints a few years ago, worked rather well.

Pete....I have burning gear up the workshop...Can meet you up there one evening (if your fronty is still drivable) and heat/crack everything off (then retighten so you can get it back home) if that would help...
If car is in bits already I will have a word up the farm 2moz to see if they have got any bottle to bottle pipes...if they have I can charge up my mini oxy bottles from the bigun and using that and a small propane bottle I will have a much more portable oxy-propane setup you can borrow... :wink:

DIY gas doesnt have the umph.

I'm sure Bernie uses Mapp and its a lot hotter than plubers DIY stuff. Dont recomed the freeze stuff, used aa few types and not impressed.

Have used a regular propane blow torch before now but you need to leave it for several minutes on the affected area. Unfortunately heat travels through metal pretty quickly so you need to watch surrounding parts, grease in a tie rod end may melt and escape if trying to loosen a tie rod for example.

I use mapp gas, for plumbing as well as heating up rusty bolts/nuts, not as good as oxy/propane or acetylene but better than butane or propane burners

MAPP also uses a different fitting to normal blow torches so you will need to buy the torch as well

MAPP gas burns way hotter than propane/butane But as previously stated needs a particular head,several people make them now personally I use one by Rothenburger,along with the standard torch handset they also make a "microflame" torch for "lead burning" which is great for getting into those awkward places :wink:
