Fuel injectors on a none Fronty motor

Wondering if anybody can give me a bit of advice with a petrol injector problem.
My 87 year old dad runs round in a little Hyundai Amica 998cc petrol - at present it is only running on cylinders 1 and 4.
After a full diagnostic crypton test by independant garage and separate mobile mechanic testing, both parties have advised that injectors 2 and 3 are blocked and that is the route of the problem.
The 3 options are:
(a) injector cleaner
(b) Injector removal and sent away for professional clean
(c) replace with new injectors.
Decided to go cheapest first and try the cleaner, hence my question.
Garage have advised running it for 400 to 500 miles and see if the cleaner will remove the crud that's causing the problem before going to the next stage of having the injectors professional cleaned.
My question is can we be doing more mechanical harm than good by running the under-powered car for that length of mileage. My thinking is will the spark firing in the 'dry' cylinders 2 and 3 be doing damage to the piston's, valves, chambers etc. If it is to the detriment of the engine, reckon we may as well move onto getting the injectors professionally cleaned sooner rather than later.

for injector cleaner to work you would need the injector to open,if the injector was opening it would be firing,if it is not firing the injector cannot be opening,if the injector is not opening ............. so on & so forth,the high mileage quoted will be in the hope that the blockage will eventually be washed down the excess fuel return.
Spark plug operating is not an issue.

Whip them out & have them serviced Pete,the cost of the cleaner & the wasted fuel will be a bigger bill :wink:

I would tend to agree with Bernie here too. But before you do, make sure that each injector is recieving its electrical feed in order for it to operate.

Keith - yes I believe the pulses are OK - when this problem first arose, my Toyota mechanic nephew was on a flying visit, and he quickly put my multi-meter on the injectors and said the readings were OK on all 4 injectors. That's the other annoying thing - he lives in Exeter and his grand-dads car is going wrong in Kent.

Yep between Sevenoaks & Penshurst,but check the phone book as it was some years ago when I used them,other than that try Testers in Edenbridge,they were agricultural engineers but now are a Land Rover Dealer with fully equiped workshop,if they cannot do them they will know who can local to you :wink:

Ive used these guys before now. Heck of a lot cheaper then new injectors.

Had a bit of a result because one of the girl's from work as a boyfriend who works for a VW main dealers with an ultrasonic injector cleaning machine. For a drink he kindly cleaned the injectors and reported back that 2 were indeed total blocked up and the other 2 weren't alot better. Comment was he couldn't understand how the car ran at all.
I've gone on to purchase a new set of 'O' rings and injector filters from a fella on e-bay.
Changed 'O' rings OK, but the original injector filters are being a bit problematical to remove.
Thought about levering out with a small flat headed screw-driver or screwing a self tapping screw in and pulling them out.
Tried both options with extreme caution without any success as I didn't want to mullar the originals without removing cleanly.
Anybody got any ideas or know if I should be using a specialist tool to remove the filters?

Feeling a bit pleased with myself now - I sorted the injector filters out my screwing a self tapper into each one 3-4 times, as advised my the fella who sold the replacement's to me, then gripped the inserted screw head in a vice, a gentle pull on the injector and out they came. Seeing the coating of crud on the filter mesh, I'm glad I changed them.
Went down Monday night to refit and then the bloody car wouldn't start. Rang the fella who cleaned the injectors for help, and he advised that it's quite normal that on re-start, the engine has to be turned over vigorusly to repressurise the fuel system.
So had another go tonight with the help of my brother and then could see I had no spark. On investigation found the lead from the coil to the distributor dangling. Eventually found the coil, refitted the lead, then refitted the fuel feed and return pipes correctly and happy days, it started. Ran like a dream.
The old chap as now realised he doesn't have to buy a new car, so my inheritance is safe for a little longer.

Despite what has been said injectors can fail in open state, and consequent mix will not ignite as will be way too rich, but you'd smell it a mile away.
