Technical help and advice wanted please?

Personally I've given up on Garages, main agents and the like.
I'd rather spend my money on an old banger which will get me about until I can find out how to fix my motor cheaply and properly myself.
I don't have a workshop so I have to wait for good weather and when the problem is fixed I sell the banger and go back to the origional motor.
If I cook it up it's my fault end of story. If a Garage fooks it up I still have to pay. DIY takes longer but you know where you are.

At least you aren't a poor Haitian about to be shafted by the Americans yet again.

There's much truth in that, French Farmer. I always used to do all my own work on previous vehicles, because I felt that a garage mechanic is casual and just earning his pay. I on the other hand would treble check everything to be certain because I was well aware of my weaknesses. At that time I was buying MG Midgets, Austin Healey Sprites , Spitfires and GT6's and doing them up over winter in my garage. If I got it wrong I learned the hard way. With this vehicle and my current job, I took the easy route and decided to pay sopmeone rather than do it myself in bleak midwinter but am now in a confustication (cluster f**k) of half truths, ambiguity and lies. I depend heavily on this forum and the many helpful posters, and would be lost without it, so thank you all.

Not checked, but you may also be able to see the crack in the exhaust manifold in the first one?

looking at your 1st pic are you going to give your egr valve a clean while you can get at easily now the heads off ?
is that the breather pipe with what looks like custard in it in the 3rd pic ?

Too late for that as he put the head back on wile I was at work. The mayo pipe goes off the back of the head towards the bulkhead and down, if that helps?

i think the mayo/ custard pipe is the crankcase breather pipe

If so shouldn't cause too many probs and gradually clear itself then. I hope.........

What do EGR valves do?

in another thread sir doris suggested that its not unusual for the pipe to collect mayo through the winter so i suppose that you clean as much out that you can before refitting

Well, £981.61 and six weeks in total later, she's running again.

However.........New development, related I think to standing so long in all weathers, maybe.......When I brake I get a rhythmical knocking through the brake pedal. The faster the road speed the faster the knock and vice versa. Any ideas, anyone?

Hi Lloyd, post the question about the brakes in the brakes section of the forum then any info gleamed on that particular issue is not last in a long thread about other issues and thus may help others, plus its more likely to get better technical answers in the correct area

Glad its sorted bud. Brakes are probably just rust scale buildup which will wear off shortly.

Yep, thanks SD, all sorted now. And with the slightly increased compression post-skim I believe she's a mite quicker too!
