Quick Water Bottle Repair.

Hi All,

Just wanted to share this quick easy repair for a leaking water bottle. My bottle had a series of cracks around the top of it under the cap and the two I saw in a scrap yard where the same so I presume it must be a standard problem with them.

What I did was cover all the cracks with cotton wool, the stuff you get from a chemist or boots. Then with a fresh tube of locktight superglue soak the entire area with it and leave it to dry. Thats it! and it works!

I only did it a couple of days ago so we'll have to see how longs it lasts but hopefully it will keep a while.

Very clever

Using cotton wool is a good idea but another method is to mix superglue with baking soda, this gives you a paste which can be used like polyfilla for cracks and gaps but with that superglue bond as superglue is not known for its gap filling properties.

Thats why they use the cotton wool here. The fibers go into the cracks and the glue follows. Thats the theory anyway.
For the larger cracks I used a small screwdriver to push the cotton wool in and just rubbed and rolled over the smaller ones.

Lets see how long it lasts

Unfortunately, superglue is not waterproof. even less so with hot water ( ask any fisherman ) so it will fail I'm afraid. I would go for a new one asap, before it strands you, or worse does the engine / head gasket in when you least want it to happen.

It used to be sold as the way to join the leader to fly fishing lines, plenty of fly fishermen have lost the Trout or Salmon of a lifetime when the leader neatly slipped off the main line, not to mention the risk of drowning the fish when it gets wrapped round a stone or branch, ,its good stuff but not for everything sadly.

Super Glue Doesn't work :oops:

But it did last about 3 weeks so I suppose it's a handy fix if you where abroad and your water bottle decides to go. It should get you home.
