mot fail questions

cheers for that one!!! i had looked at levering in that hole, but so far have had it down as bad engineering practice!!!! :lol:

Hi Kevin,You most probably have a wear ridge on the drum,look on the back plate you will see a rubber grommet...........

Pull that out & look inside with a torch & you will see a star wheel that adjusts the brake shoes................................

Drum off (Sorry pic quality is rubbish)..................

To further aid removal there is a tapped (M6x1.0mm)hole,wind a bolt in & tap the disc at 180 degrees

Reassembly is eased if you turn a chamfer in place of the wear ridge :wink:

The rear drum models are slightly different. The adjuster wheel is turned through a hole in the face of the drum (the side the wheel bolts to). There is also a large + head screw which holds the drum to the inner housing.

i feel like an :butt:

as i didn't look at the back of the drum! i just unscrewed the locating screw and started tapping, and tapping and and tapping and the copper hammers got bigger. but aye that star wheel is the adjuster alright!

kevin quiettly creeps away having had the basics of a very old type of brake system explained to him :oops:

aye A friend i'll skim a wee lead in as i clean them up!

Again Il say that the adjuster is accessed through a hole in the front of the drum not the rear.

that would make me feel a bigger prat than i already do fella, if ive missed a hole in the front of the drum, no worries either way, i dig what im doing wrong (i hopes)

my pictures are of the later axle (as used on 2.8 :wink:

) anyhow the the basic system is the same,except you will be looking for a rectangular rubber bung in the backplate above & behind of the axle

Thinking about it, its been a few months since I saw drum brakes on a frontera so it may have been another car that had the hole in the front of the drum :oops:

best crack on (says kev trying to get him self going)

new front shocks fitted, but stuck on the hub..... i can't find a grommet on the back plate!! i'll go with gypsys idea that the shoes are stuck on a lip... i seem to have a fraction of side to side flex but no movement at all. my own fault like with my lack of maintainance :oops:

spanners only come out if they break or fail the motc!

any more ideas most welome

anyways, once i find the grommet(which was there in plain view this morning, tho i swear its appeared overnight) i wind the adjuster in but im still stuck, next year i might mot her in summer

a freind of mine called by and showed me where i was going wrong.... both hubs now off, just use brute force and two people hammering and lever behind the back plates!!!
so day 3 off work coming up, one brake to refit, brakes to adjust,bleed and the stop light to sort out.... hope i can do it tomorrow :roll:

cue for a moan! saturday was ok, but i was soaked on sunday! did my real job monday, got wet on the car again yesterday and today aint been bad

better now i can see the end of the job....
