I've had a bit of a fiddle about and it only leaks when the engine is running, there is no issue with power so i'm thinking it might be a return pipe split.

When the engine is running the pump is running, so it could be feed or return. The metal pipes on top of the sender do rot through, so may be worth dropping the tank while its a drip and not a spray.
