Potential owner needs help and advice.

Hi everyone
I am looking for a frontera sport and have seen a silver T reg 2.2 rs. it has 78,000 miles on and he has no history of the timing chain being done. Firstly does anyone know how much this would cost to do.
Secondly do the 1999 models have a removeable roof at all as i couldnt see how it came off. It not an issue i just wondered.
Finally on the test drive i noticed that none of the dial were working. I pointed this out to the guy in the garage and when i turned the headlights on the dials suddenly jumped in to action. They did say that they would get an electrician to fix it if i was interested. Is this a known problem and should i be cautious of it possibly being an electrical nightmare.

Welcome Nick,

Not being familiar with the B we will have to rely on others to answer you questions, although the dash problem you describe is quite common and has been fixed with various degrees of success by some (use the search tool).

Hi, as far as the dash is concerned, if he is going to have it fixed there is nothing to worry about. It is a common fault on the B and as Lawence said, it's fixable. As for the timing chain, this doesnt need to be changed so dont worry about that either.

The only real drawback of the B series diesel is the delicate fuel pump which is expensive to replace but its not a fault as such.

The roof does come off, it takes 2 people about 15-20 minutes to remove it

Cam Chain`s (there are 2) as noted previously are not a normal service item,just to be sure here.. You are referring to the 2.2 diesel engine not the 2.2 petrol which has a cam belt which is a service item

I have the model as you describe the same year etc, and I like the car a lot, I just love the shape of the thing.

What I learnt real fast is that if you have to treat the car with respect and then you should be ok. And by that I mean regular oil changes, Ive taken to doing mine every 5000 miles, and dont use smokey Diesel Fuel cos it dont like it. The Inlet Maniflod blocks-up with soot eventually = Just Here.

Ive learnt loads by reading about it on this Forum {Admin and Others} and I urge you to do the same
