6 metres of steel on a l.w.b

Postby jmc on Sun Jul 19, 2009 10:50 pm

On Wednesday I went to fetch several lengtht of 6mm round .I had intended to cut them in half to get them in as its possible to flatten back the passenger seat (first taking the rear seat out) and get three metres in easily down to the footwell.I looked at the steel I was carrying ,then at my frontera and thought" I wonder".I put a bit of canvas on one side of the roof alongside the roofrail and slid the first bar over from the back until flopped down and touched onto the bullbars.I had a look, and reckoned it was easily within the law of one metre over front and back.I then loaded all fifteen bars on and tied the front to the bull bar, the middle to the roof rail and the other ends to the spare wheel.I put a bit of plumbing pipe insulation foam on the bullbar so as not to scratch the paint too much. Really pleased,it was fine all the way home about four miles. The next day I did the same but with two bits of 12mm round. This means I save time by not having to hitch the long trailer up with the board and if I decide to get the steel on my way into work I dont need to go to work to get the trailer first.
However I am not sure about putting bigger bits on, these small sections were ok as they curved easily and sprang back nicely when untied. I will cautiously experiment to see how thick a section I can get away with.May have to glue a pad of thick rubber onto the roof on the passenger side at the front if I keep doing this.
I must remember next time to unload them from the back next time as I nearly damaged the windscreen pulling them off the front
So this good news for my frontera, it can carry 6metres of steel on it. :)

Well done, but what do you need 6m of steel for?
The shepherdess & I once transported a 7 metre roof tree 25 km with a caravan chassis trailer behind a Renault 4. It was so long we had the back door open so the end of it was in the car right behind our heads and when we came to a tight corner we had to take the trailer off and do it by hand.
Back to the question what the thingummy are you needing round bar that long for?
I have to know.
If you need something done quickly just ask a busy woman then get the f"k out of her way.

Thanks all for the encouragement! Gregate is right I wont be able to resist a 2.8, or his persuasive charm i think! I am in France last two weeks in August so will have to make it to another meet .Frenchfarmer, I am a blacksmith and frequently go to a steel stockist with a trailer to fetch black mild steel which comes in 6m lengths, except some box section and girders which come in 7.5m lengths and 12m lengths  ,I usually buy smaller sections 40x8 25x25 etc. On this occasion I was making nails :? so it got chopped up into small bits.I loved your story about the 7 m length :) I think that trailers are the last bastion of motoring freedom, they dont have to be tested and you can put any homemade thing behind your car but I wonder for how long?
