banter general discussions etc

Well, I finally made it back from foreign parts to my place yesterday for the first time in a fortnight (trucking from a different depot and visiting friends, hehe) and got my car into the local truck workshop for my much anticipated steam clean... Nice blokey, went round and jetted the paintwork for me, then took the steamer to my engine bay and gearbox to clean all the crud off it. Not bad for a tenner, i thought The bad news though is that this has confirmed my suspicions about where the oil's coming from, and it's the gasket between upper oil pan and the engine block. Cue some nasty words when I realised, heh... So, knowing that removing the sump requires dropping the front diff, and probably lots of swearing and getting oily, I've decided it's a bit much for me and the father to do, lacking a ramp, or engine hoist, etc. What I want to know is, what does the TIS system reckon for labour on that job for a 2.8?? Parts I can phone around for tomorrow, but I'd like if possible a reasonable idea of what the labour charge'd be before committing myself. Cheers, Jim

Thats... well, not too bad, actually. Nowhere near as bad as I was expecting, at anyrate. With that and the parts - gonnae have to drain the oil so may as well change that and fit a new filter too, I should be able to cope with that. Cheers Ste (and Lawrence via PM, hehe ) Jim

Gold stars to Lawrence & Ste Just phoned my local Vx dealer out of curiosity and would you believe, their system says 3.2 hours. Well, eventually it did, after we'd convinced it that yes, you *can* have a 2.8 in an M-reg vehicle, heh. Total price from them for both gaskets, seals, oil, filter, labour and Mr Darling's cut was £380 give or take a few pence. Oh, and they'll even sort me for getting to and from work too So what do ye reckon then fellas?? Vx are never the cheapest in the world, but given the job, and the fact that it's GM parts and a fixed price, I'm partly tempted.

hope that includes oil, filter, and gasket, still over 100 quid an hour, i did my own on my truck whitch is same as 2.8 fronty, trolley jack, 2 axle stands, 100euro for gasket, oil, and filter, and 4 hours of dirty work, its not complicated, cheers ken. get back to me when you have the time over my questions, but get yourself sorted first
