Looking for a bit more power?

Postby JamieFOB on Sun Nov 30, 2008 6:33 pm

Hi Fplks,
My "S" plate 2.2 petrol LWB feels a bit sluggish, sort of under-powered. I've heard this is a common opinion amongst other owners? Had a quick troll through the site for any suggestions but short of one who'd had the complete engine blue printed for about £300, couldn't find a lot. Maybe it's me, not looking in the right place? If there's anyone out there who could point me in the right direction or offer a suggestion, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Had a quick browse on Ebay and came acroos this....
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0032784768
Anyone fitted one? if so, what were the results?

Cheers,
Jamie. :?

I'd tend to steer clear of magical bolt on goodies for any engine, especially the ecotec.
A damn good service and maybe a free flowing panel filter would be money better spent.

While the 2.2 is not a fast vehicle, nor will it ever be it should pull well through all the gears and offer a fair amount of low down grunt.

When was it last serviced? and most importantly in what sort of condition is the air filter in? A blocked air filter will reduce the power drastically.

Another thing that can make a reasonable difference is the type of sparkplug used. Also aged sparkplug leads will reduce power and economy as can a blocked fuel filter.

My 2.2 has hit 105mph at one point and never really lacks grunt, overtaking well at 70/80mph on the motorway. Bear in mind that it is not a fast revving engine and will never overtake quickly due to the size of the flywheel and weight of the car. Increased tyre sizes will reduce acceleration times as well.

Should hit 60mph in 12 seconds which to be honest is not bad for something that weighs nearly 2 tonnes.
I also drink Port and I'm not ashamed to say it!

The item u found on the bay is not a magical bolt on goodie it is an FSE power boost valve which replaces your original on your fuel system and in turn increases the fuel pressure in the rail. Now I have used one of these before on an XR2i n to tell u the truth it did make it more responsive n smoother under power but not really any faster. It still topped out at 130 n didnt get there any faster either, so i would agree n say spend the money on a service n K&N filter.

Agree with all the above
Good service, new sparkys, K&N panel filter, fuel filter
and also its worth having the injectors cleaned.
Done this on my Fronty, performance improved and helped mpg as well

Thanks for all of the above guys. As I've only just got the vehicle it seems like a good service & replacement filter, plugs etc., is the way to go. Had the loan of my son's BMW X3 while he's in Australia, so guess I've been spoilt and it's rubbed off in the comparison. No complaints with the Frontera though. Does exactly what I want of it and I still reckon it's a hell of a lot of car for the money! Two items I'm searching for seem to be like rocking horse droppings though? A load space cover & a genuine Frontera dog gaurd (the one that clips in place at the roof and straps down to the floor). They seem to be snapped up real quick where ever they appear? I'm also looking for a series "B" manufacturers handbook. The previous owner obviously lost his and has replaced it with a series "A". Been "Googling" all of the above and scanning the dreaded Ebay but so far no success.
Sites real good, easy to navigate and I'm sure I'll find it helpful in time to come.
Cheers once again,
Jamie. :drink: :drink:

See if you can get a loan of a 2.5 shogun or a green oval badged thing while the fronty's got the bonnet up, couple of hours in one of those and you'll soon think yours is a rocketship
