advice 4wd snow

should i use 4wd when driving on snow on the road even though the snow is not compacted & should i use high or low range gears ?

Only if the road becomes very icy and slippy. As soon as you regain normal grip then swap back to 2wd. As for which gear, probably 4high, unless you are very stuck somewhere :lol:

yes, as Jay said the 4wd on a frontera should only be used when the car has the abilty to slip it wheels. The reason for this is that the fronty has no centre differential so cannot allow the front and rear wheels to operated at different speeds as required when turning, these forces would cause windup on the axles putting a great deal of strain. The way is releases this is by allowing a wheel to slip slightly as it would be able to on soft ground or deep snow.

For snow driving I was always told to put it into 4 WD, drive forward to engage the Auto Hubs, and then put it back into 2 WD, without reversing.

That way, if you get into a position you need 4WD, you can just engage it, while remaining control in 2WD should you get into a skid.

If you do not engage the hubs and get stuck, it's too late, pre-engaging 4WD means you stand a better chance of getting moving again.

It does make me giggle the 62mph 4wd thing, I would poop myself at 60 mph then realising I needed 4wd :shock:

I tried that too few years ago. Drove over 100km/h, and at home i found out that circlip has gone loose, and drive shaft was not properly in its position in front wheel. Never tried that again.

Well in snow and Ice I've always used 4wd Low so you can use the engine breaking to control speed because using the brakes on sheet Ice will send you sliding with no control. I done the Croisiere Blanche which was 3 days of playing on gravel, sheet ice and very deep snow and I didn't use 4wd hi once as the gearing is just to high to control speed specially down high
