My Fronty failed its MOT

Postby frontera1 on Mon Mar 03, 2008 2:12 pm

Two things: the brake hose from the body down to the rear axle is chafed. Where is the best place to get a new one and does it just unbolt from the block with the copper pipes, or is it fixed and I have to unbolt the copper pipes?

Chafed pipe

How does it undo?

Parking brake only working to 7% efficiancy. The rear brakes work fine and the handbrake travel is short and feels good. What could be casuing this?

The hose should unscrew from the block.Handbrake could be any number of things but most likely partialy seized cable (normally nearside )

Be sure to lubricate it all now long before the weekend.. that way you hopefully won't have anything break.

We're back. Changed the hose. Getting the pipes to undo was a right royal pain in the a***. Changed the rear shoes, getting the drums off was a right royal pain in the A**** and took it back. Guess what, it failed again. Handbrake still not up to efficiancy. Tester suggested I drive around with the brake ever so slightly on to bed the new shoes in. Done this for 30 miles on and off and took it back yet again. This time he passed it but said the handbrake was only just working enough to pass.

Cables are free, adjustment all done and new shoes. Can't think what else to do. The drums could be replaced but the rear brakes are working fine. Think I'll leave it for now and worry about it next year

How many notches on the handbrake do you have.
To ajust the handbrake make adjustments at each wheel making sure both sides are the same clearance. Never try to take up adjustment on the cable.
