4x4 Response Wales Training Weekend.

Well then. In keeping with me being a 4x4 response member we have training weekends 2 or 3 times a year. The idea being to encourage team building, basic survival skills and basic first aid along with my favourite, Off road driving skills

Anyway, got there at 9am on Saturday morning promptly signed in and went for the driver briefing before heading straight to survival training followed by a recovery session involving the safe use of winches and Hi-Lift jacks.
Then it was onto lunch and afterwards onto the driving assessments. Started off trundling through the forestry before hitting a couple of byways, mostly fairly tame but with a few steps and rocky sections. This was followed by a spell in a quarry with a more extreme circuit involving steep drop offs and a couple of nice short steep climbs.
Later we went around the Farms own off road track. This was quite small but had plenty of winding climbs through the trees as well as the inevitable tracks winding back down.
Finally we had a first aid briefing.

Sunday I was up early (unusual for me I know) to finish off the training with the last thing left on my card, a navigation exercise.

Funnily enough I was on the way to the car and I bumped into Chris (Yakatar). He showed up and managed to get all his boxes ticked on the day. We had a natter about our trucks and went our separate ways before meeting again later in the day.

Anyway, I finished the nav exercise and a few of us went laning for the rest of the day.

So heres a few pics of the laning, I dont have any of the training sessions unfortunately and I offered to be rearguard since I had front recovery points and a CB.

The photos have come from a couple of different sources so credit goes to Mark, Teresa and Guy. All top laning companions and handy to have around for a natter over dinner

The event was held at Llanerchinda Farm B&B near Llandovery which is just North of Brecon.

I can highly recommend the B&B, good food, a nice off road course and some nice lanes in the area as well.

am i on the wrong forum, looked like a landrover appreciation society meet last few pics looked nice though, love the lift

Hah, It may as well have been a land rover meet. There was Yakatar and me with Frontera's, 1 Suburau forester, I suzuki grand Vitara a new one not the older more hardcore version and that was about it from the other makes.

The British red Cross were there as well to learn what their vehicles can do, not necessarily because they will be driving cross country a lot but so that they have the skills in case they ever need to.

Another FOG member joins the ranks of the 4x4 Respose Network

Couldn't make it for the Sat start but set off Sunday morning at 7am and arrived at the farm about 8:30. Did wonder if I would bump into Phil while I was driving there and sure enough there was his Frontera parked up as I arrived. It did seem a bit of a LR fest but at least there were a few other makes to show them they are not the best 4x4xfar

Good to meet up with Phil again and have a natter and also check out his Fronty, haven't seen it since we went to the farm at Radyr last year and he has done alot of nice mods since then

Overall I enjoyed the day, it was a bit busy as I was trying to complete all the required sections in the one day so skipped lunch to get on with it and finished around 5pm.

There was only 1 challenge I avoided, in the quarry there was a short steep climb but there was no way the Frontera would clear it, too much front and rear overhang and amongst the group only the specials and an SJ cleared it.

Should be another one in the spring at Radnor forest. That will be another good weekend as I think we get the whole forest to play with.

So whats all this about 4x4 response does that mean your on call 24hrs a day i've looked at peaks 4x4 response but ther aint much info on the site so i'm a bit confused as to how it works what happens if they call you when your at work do you have to go or can you say when you can be contacted.
