PC video cards

I have an on board NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE video card, would I be correct in thinking if I bought another plug in card that had say 128mb I would free up RAM on my system?

If so what would be a cheap upgrade ?

if your talking about a home system your correct, most laptops wont except a video card, with a tower system you will have to find out if you need an agp or pci express card, 256 mb ones can be had for around £50 now

yes thats right ste as your memory would be freed up to run other applications rather than you graphics but i would go a bit bigger than that personally you depending on what you use your graphics for??? (gaming etc) 256 or 512 would ensure that the majority of your system memory would not be used for graphics, AGP or PCI are the types you will have to open up your tower and find out mate take a pic and i will be able to tell you what it is by looking at the socket its fitted in

Yes you would free up ram, and some CPU tasks.

What’s the budget, and do you want to game?

Its not all about the memory on the graphics card, it’s the speed.

Its not for gaming, just to speed things up a tad, aint got £50 though :oops:

Ste, it would be helpful to know your Ram, processor and if possible your motherboard info.
Also do you want to build up your system, maintain it, or just keep it going on the cheap.
I ask this, because a good graphics card deserves a good power supply, this is a much under rated area

But from the sound of things, (limited gaming and a tight ass) a 9400gt card at £30 whould see your system improved, and be upto date with DX10 and shader 4.0

If you have AGP I have a Radeon 9000 Pro 128 meg DDR you can have for a beer or two,it will be a bit second hand (dusty) was working fine when removed from a spare machine last year.

Likewise if it's pci express i have a an old 6800xt 128mb, wouldn't want alot for it

its pci express 16x... can tell from the pic of the slot. reasonable nvidia or ati cards around the £30 to £40 mark will free up the system memory and boost the graphics quite a bit. as suggested a 9400gs 0r 9500gs would do it.

Are they the three white slots with the dark slot above in my picture ?

Just to confirm, You have one PCI express x16 slot (your graphics slot)
The other slots, 3 gray are just PCI

So I have to get a PCI express x16 slot compatible card ?

The other slots are for other gards, other than graphics, eg, sound, serial, usb, firewire, etc the list is endless.

The card that J22 has may suit you,depends how much he is lookimg for it??????
