Broadband Techy Advice needed.

Broadband Techy Advice needed.

Postby FUDDY MUCKER on Sun Jan 04, 2009 8:07 pm

Right, having a few issues with SKY Broadband at the moment.

Since I started with them My average speed has been around 6.5 - 7.0 mbps, anytime of day or night

For the past few weeks I've been experiencing very slow speeds, sometimes down to 0.5 mbps.

I initally put it down to the Christmas on line rush affecting the internet. Anyway to cut a long story short It's still running very slow.

Here are some details.

Usually runs at around 7.0 MBPS anytime of day or night

Exchange is about 200 yards from my house.

Router is plugged directly in to socket that enters the house.

Router is connected using ethernet cable.

Have replaced ALL the connection cables to and from the moden with brand new, unopened, and unused ones.

Replaced all of micro filters with brand new ones.

Disconnected all other extensions from the main socket.

Run a virus scan, and a spy ware scan.

Deleted all internet clutter, such as temp files, history etc.

Tested speed using several broadband speed testers, including http://www.Speedtest.net

Also tested speed using wireless connection. Still the same crappy, slow, usless speed.

Just had a major rant and rave at the usless SKY Techy type bloke how gave me a web address to type in to get some details of my router and I got this .....

Modem
ADSL Firmware Version A2pB023o.d20h
Modem Status Up
DownStream Connection Speed 16378
UpStream Connection Speed 764
VPI 0
VCI 38

He pointed out that my modem was recieving speeds of 16 MBPS.....

Yet a speed test reveals this .....

Image

Told him in no uncertain terms that I will detach his head from his body and poo down his neck and that Sky can get stuffed cos I'm going to give my £100 + per month to Virgin Media. (He did'nt even respond to the last two comments !!!!)

So, is Sky giving me the run around and trying to fob me off with BULLSH*T or is there a problem else where ????

I've run out of ideas.

Look forward to some replies.

Yeap, full reset. And tried the modem on different phone sockets, which when the power is switched off to move it, automatically resets itself.

Jase,

If you want, I might be able to pop over one night this week and have a look for you - see if I can sort out what's going on ;)

Had a similar problem with BT a few months back, BEFORE I changed to SKY. BT kept insisitng there was nothing wrong with there line and that the problem was somewhere in my house. Told them where to Stuff it and made a written complaint to OFCOM. Low and Behold, 2 weeks later, got a later apologising for the inconvienice and that a fault HAD been found at the exchange, Speed popped back up to 6.5 Mbps.

Problem I got now is my Phone line, phone calls and Broadband are supplied by SKY via a BT fitted Phone line, so anyone got any ideas who's responsible and how do I go about convincing someone that there is a problem.

if more than 1 computer is affected then can you could get a new modem [that would be the last thing you can test]from argos install it & try it, if the new modems ok keep it. if theres no difference it must be the line so take the modem back within 12 days & get a refund

Apparantly, the useless To$$er who I spoke do has already done a line test and everything is OK, coupled with the SKY website he directed me to use for my modem information, which I think is a bit of a coincidence, as it showed 16 MBPS, now when I had BT, I was told the maximum speed my line would take was 7 MBPS.

Now BT fitted, owned, and maintained this line since it was fitted 12 years ago, now SKY suddenly come along, take over all the running of my phone line and Hey Presto I'm told my line will accept 16 MBPS, something a miss me thinks

Don't suppose you might have been downloading large amounts lately, such that an isp might consider to be over your fair share maybe, and throttling your connection as a result?
Not that they do such things of course.....
