cheep pda advice

hi people i need some advice on getting a cheep pda to put memory map on it any advice welcome as basiclly i have no idea what i need ,all im looking for is something cheep to put in the Tonka when im out green laning as advice and pda suggestions please thanks Rob

Have you an old laptop? then use a gps receiver with it, big screen and and inverter.

i really looking for something to just go on the front screen a bit like my sat nav so any advice more that welcome as for the laptop ste thats for when i get a bit older and my eye sight goes 8-)

The newer pda screens are to small in my opinion, been there and done that but the old one's are great, I wish I never sold my old one of these :oh yer:

you just need a bluetooth receiver like an old tome tom receiver.

Some of the guys use another old pda and crack it to operate MM but for the life of me I cant remember its name.

FREE OS Map Data From The Ordnance Survey!

Using the OpenData project from the Ordnance Survey you can download the entire UK for free. As far as I can tell there is no catch lol. You'll need a program like Memory Map or Fugawi to use the data tho.

The data is downloaded via an email link as a .zip file. the actual map tiles are in the geotiff format which is supported by most navigation software.
Be warned that there are around 1000 smaller tiles for each large tile set.

If you have version 5 of memory map you can actualy already download the map tiles for free using their digital map shop. I'm not sure about fugawi.

I have a sneaky feeling that you don't actualy have to buy memory map to use it either.

Ok, from what I have found is that if you "sort of Know" the area, a PDA will be Ok, and if you are following sombody they are fine as a backup.

If you are leading a group then a Laptop is best as you can see more on the screen, and if you do get something wrong you can easily make amendments on a laptop rather than on the small screen of a PDA.

As for inverters, you can usually get a 12v input for the laptop, as the laptop prob runs on 12 - 20v, so creating 240v to then put thru the laptop charger to bring back down to 12 -20v can be a bit exessive, but I do that as I have a inverter fitted anyway.

In the past I used a Dell Axim X50. If you look on Ebay you'll find plenty of them, but look for one that comes with a GPS receiver.

I found it ok for a while, but we now use a tablet PC and the larger screen makes it much easier.

I use a HP RZ1710, old and basic but good sized screen and easy to use, does the job fine with the tomtom gps windscreen cradle (cheers mark :wink:

I used to have a Tungsten T for planning my work jobs and although it got abused it still ticked along

To run MM on a PDA, it must be of the Windows type in my experience, although technology might of moved on...

I use an O2 XDAIIi, with MM and TomTom (but not at the same time), with a wired TomTom GPS receiver.

The Ipaq's are similar but the early ones did not have a built in phone.

This is what I use - Ebay clicky - you'll still need a GPS receiver though.
