how do I get emticons to work?

Finally plucked up courage to ask, how do I get the emticons to work ? Iv'e tried several things on a number of occasions but to no avail. Thanks.

When typing your message, mover the mouse over to the right and select the emoticon you fancy and click on it

in this case a colon and a capital D appeared in the text, which when I "Submit" turns into a smiley face

but no wonder I didnt know how to do it because the emticon doesnt appear in the typing.Thank you trugga,drift and philmotman.Might do another one
