Early 2.8TDI Sport

Postby Shytot4x4 on Wed Jun 06, 2007 7:08 pm

I've recently bought an M-reg 2.8TD Sport which was first registered 8th March 1995. It would appear that this date is a couple of months before the official introduction of the 2.8 Sport. I'm just wondering if there's any 'history' to my new ride. Was it in the press fleet for instance? I'm not looking to enhance the value or anything - It'd just be nice to find a pic of my Fronty in an old 4X4 mag or something... The reg goes like M***TVS.

Cheers,
Simon H

It would be interesting to see a photo of the engine bay.

Is it leaf or coil sprung at the rear ?

Coils at the rear. I could arrange a pic of the engine bay. Any particular point of interest? It looks pretty much like the 2.8TD pic in the Haynes manual, although I haven't looked TOO closely like in a 'spot the difference' competition!
Will try to do a pic tomorrow afternoon. Anything else while I've got the camera out? Dash, switches, trim, etc? The only slightly odd thing I've noticed is that there is a factory fitted illuminated switch (which seems to work) on the dash for front fogs and there aren't any front fogs...

Interesting to hear it has rear coils (which is correct for the 2.8), but as you apprectiate, was not introduced until May of 1995 (hence coilers are often referred to as 1995.5 - 5 referring to the 5th month)

Maybe it was a prototype or pre production, but as far as I'm aware, the Luton registered number plates were FGS (as min is).

The fog light switch you refer to could be the pre heat switch.

I aksed about a photo of the engine bay to see if it look factory or maybe a transplant, but so far I'm convinced it could be origonal.

Maybe it's not on it's origonal reg plates.

Even so, a SWB 2.8 is the most desired combination.

Will the DVLA not tell you who the first registered keeper was?

I saw quite a few pre production Vectra's around 1995, Astras a couple of years later and the 3 cylinder 1 litre Corsa when it was introduced. They all had oddities such as trim that didn't match the production models, extras that weren't standard etc. The Corsa was brilliant - Vauxhall had one of the BTCC test drivers taking it round the country to every dealer and he had ragged it everywhere he went - talk about a 'loose' engine - it revved like mad and absolutely flew for a 1 litre engine!

Thanks for the replies!
Like I said in another thread I'm new to Frontys so I'm still finding my way around. It never occured to me to contact Vauxhall directly (seems a bit like phoning Tesco and asking them who they sold a can of beans to in 1995...). Nor did I know that DVLA would provide details of the first registered keeper. Maybe the new registration doc will throw some light on the situation when it arrives. All I've got for now is the new keeper's green slip.
I kinda half expected some expert to come up with a list of chassis numbers like they do in the LR/RR clubs...

Cheers,
Simon H

Engine bay pics: (Sorry about the poor lighting - it's a bit dark and dingy in the garage - and please ignore the ludicrously small battery, that'll be the first thing to be replaced!)

Had to dig out the log bok for mine today, it was first regstered in April 1995, no quite as early as Shytot4x4 but still before the May 95 launch
Soon to be without a Frontera after 10 years of owning one :-(
