Limp mode

Postby aredee on Sun Nov 15, 2015 11:10 am

May be sounds a silly question but what does the car drive like in limp mode ,Reason for asking is as mentioned in a previous post the previous owner has linked the eml to the low fuel warning light , so the light isnt on but some times when i start and drive off it has no power and wont go above about 20 mph its an auto and i have discovered that if i put into 3nd and drive it hard it does seem to clear the problem quicker . but either way it clears and drives fine after about 5 mins

Hi that sounds like limp mode but it sounds more like a problem I had with my manual box. Maybe the inlet manifold needs cleaning, as that could be the problem. Once I cleaned my inlet manifold, it now runs and accelerates great at low and high speeds now. Remove the egr valve and have a look at that to see if it's dirty and if it is then I would think your inlet manifold would need cleaned.

thanks dave for the info i think this is definatley a job that should be looked at on my truck but im a little nervous as to whether i would be able to complete especially with the fuel bleeding thats required after.
Roughly how long should job take if i put it into a garage for the work

I couldn't say how long a garage would take. I did mine myself and I was abit weary about doing mine but I was glad that I did. What I did about the fuel, was that I primed the fuel injector pump and then used easy start by spray it into the air intake pipe and it started up with now problems and its running good. Mine was like it was hitting a rev limiter but now it's all good again.

Use what bobster says or use Gunk engine degreaser liquid not the Gunk foam and medium or fine wire wool which you can get from Homebase or B&Q. Cleaning the egr valve is good, as I cleaned my egr valve and the problem went away but it didn't stay away for long until I cleaned the inlet manifold. I'm not a mechanical minded person but I done alot of reading of how to do it, then I plucked up the courage to clean the inlet manifold, the difficult part is getting it running again but like I suggested, prime the injector pump with easy start with someone cranking the engine over. It you are going to clean the inlet manifold, might be best to get brand new inlet manifold gaskets, as I replaced mine.

Don't prime the injector pump with easy start but with fresh diesel from a fuel can, then spray easy start inlet the air intake pipe that connects to the turbo, the engine will shake, rattle but it will kick into life. Keep the engine at about 2,000 to 3,000 rpm until the smoke has cleared from the exhaust and it will be fine.

I bought a multi fit socket set and they fit any nut and bolt even those bolts. The bolts for the egr valve are 8mm and the bolts for the inlet manifold are the same size, the nuts for the inlet manifold are 10mm and the fuel pipes are a 17mm spanner.

http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/SOCKET-SET-18-P ... nav=SEARCH is a link for a multi fit socket set on eBay.

finally got around to removing the egr valve ,it was like coal on the end have taken couple of pics but dont seem able to attach them here .Guess with the amount of crud i got off im definitely going to have to remove and clean inlet manifold in the near future going to have to do some more research into the fuel bleeding though first as thats the bit that scares me

is there any quick and easy ways of clearing the cr4p off the manifold i;e chemicals that can be added to fuel or squirted in to air filter or am i going to have to bite the bullet and strip it down and just use elbow grease and will power that i can get it all back together and working again

Looking at your photo of your egr valve, it looks like your going to have to bite the bullet and remove the inlet manifold off to clean the crud off.

Here is a link on priming the fuel injector pump afterwards, this worked for me.
