HGV Sat Nav

HGV Sat Nav

Postby Drift on Tue Oct 08, 2013 6:06 pm

What is a reliable and relatively cheap HGV sat nav?

I will be using a three axeled Scania rigid but I will be carrying some hi masted Reach and counterbalance fork lift trucks and its quite a high bed on the truck.
Added to this as its the only rigid I will be going to places the artic trucks find it difficult to get too, but with the danger of low tight bridges  .

I'll have a dig through the stack of Trucking and Truck & Driver mags at work, Ste.
They tend to do reviews of HGV oriented kit reasonably frequently.

The one I was always eyeing was the Snooper Truckmate range, but they start from about £200 IIRC. Nice and big screen, and properly designed for trucks.

Cheap enough Ste, and reading through the ad it seemed okay until I reached this bit, and I quote... "please note that the maps used on some of the units have a small bug with heights, when inputting the height please put in 2.6 x2"

I suppose, if you just attack the bridge at a fair rate of knots, close eyes in the last couple of mtrs and get the prayer beads out .....might work, def fit the second time, just gotta line up on the groove that's neatly sliced under the bridge... :oh yer:

On the other hand you could just take a saw to the masts or lay the trucks on their sides... It'd fit then ....

PS, I used to drive a truck  I don't now ...
This posting may have been helpfull, on the other hand probably not... Either way, I may have had drink when posting it in which case it's probably not as helpfull as it could have been

Work safe, and remember all technical problems can be resolved with a hammer, the trick is knowing where to hit it and how big a hammer to use (I often find it may also help to have a spare bit in the shed to replace the bit you have just mullered ;) )

Work in Progress (or not as the case may be) I give you.... 'O-no' the truck.

Comments on 'O-no' the truck may be left here

The sat nav is an aid to use after the motorway but not gospel

Its just the variety of heights I will be carrying and the areas they will be going, pretty much country wide.

Navfree on the iphone changes the routes for anything from walking to artics and it's free :D As for the bridges the lower ones tend to be very well signed.

A bit time consuming but could you street google, dropping down to road level to get an indication.

I'm not a truck driver but any time I'm venturing
to pastures new I have a gander to get the lay of the land especially for unusual junctions.

My ex used the ProCab addon for her TomTom unit, the Go 910 IIRC.
She was a very good driver but would get a tad stressed going to new places (usually in the back of beyond) with an artic reefer so I think her and the parents clubbed together for the unit and added that after.

Worked well from what I can remember. You downloaded the data and copied it to the TomTom then there was a bit of setup to get your height, weight and width input, and then off you went. It worked off POI's so if your rig changed you just changed the set you were using and that was that.

I borrowed an older Snooper earlier in the week and it worked well I thought so I nicked Lee's credit card and plumbed for this as I will likely be kicking off full time in the latter half of next week.

Cheers Jim, I didnt go for the higher version not through fear of death but the features on it like bluetooth and stuff where not needed as the cab has bluetooth anyway and all other functions would be covered by my tablet especially as I may be doing one or two overnighters a week mainly around Shrewsbury, so movies and ti'nternet is covered
