IMPORTANT***CHANGES TO "WEEKENDER IN THE WOODS"***

Postby gregster on Mon Feb 22, 2010 11:37 pm

Good evening Foggers....

Unfortunately the Great British weather has thrown a spanner in the works for us...maybe we were a bit optimistic planning this kind of event for late Feb...

And is looking like the weekender may have to be just a single day picnic styley event on the Saturday if there is sufficient interest...

I will make I final decision when I have a look at the site tomorrow evening after work...

The problems...

At the workday yesterday it was pretty wet and we have had torrential rain today, and are forecast rain everyday up to the weekend, so the site will not get a chance to dry out at all...
The key concerns are that the sections of farm tracks that will still be used will be damaged massively with a full weekends useage,
The nice grassy field where caravans would be pitched is on an incline to enter, and gaining access would mean tearing up the field which must be avoided as its use is a bonus and this would mean we will not be allowed to use it again in future...
The tarp covers which we were planning to use may be problematic if the forcast high winds persist into the weekend...hence giving no shelter from the rain...
The camping area which was wet yesterday will be like a swamp as the ground was already waterlogged...
Getting the FOGBOG in and out of the woods is gonna be nigh on impossible...
If the high winds persist I am concerned about people camping in tents in the woods, with the amount of dead trees that may loose a branch or worse...

We are really gutted as were so looking forwards to this, and we have all put so much into getting things ready for it, but we want other Foggers who travel miles to get here to have a great weekend, but with the weather as it is, it aint gonna be fun...
There will be more weekend events, we are looking at dates for weekenders in July and September, and also Saturday afternoon arrivals and camping for the sunday picnics in the summer...

Please add you name to the new list below if you are up for a picnic on the Saturday...if the weather is ok on the day we can make the day go into the evening, as no-one's got work the next day...
Costs...
£20 per car and driver....
£5 per adult visitor (other than the driver of a car participating)
Any profits, after paying for the rent on the site, will go towards costs of maintaining and developing the site further for future events

If there is enough interest then this will be our plan B, should the woods be too wet/windy and we cant go ahead with the camping...

Will post a definite decision tomorrow evening....but in honesty I fear that a single day event will be the only option... :(

Laters

Greg

It's a total shame and knowing how much effort you and Sal have put in thus far in organising this event, you must fill totally gutted, but you can't do nowt about the weather Greg. Safety as got to be paramount. And I totally agree, we have to look after the site, because there is so much enjoyment for all to be had down there in both winter and drier conditions, it would be crazy to risk losing it.
So my name is on the list for Saturday.

I have chosen a route about 25mile in total, of which about 10 miles will be on byways through local woods and farm fields so AT's as a minimum tyre requirement is advisable (but if you only have road tyres we have ropes  ). I could also use a volunteer as navigator if anyone is willing (broke my sat nav  )?
Estimated time to complete is 2 hours, but this is depending on the conditions of the lanes (i.e. how muddy they are). If time allows I can always extend the route.

If anyone only wants to only come along for the laning, we should be looking to start at 6pm.
Laning is a very good entry to using your Fronty off road and using the 4wd. The only risk of damage to your car is a few hedge scratches, and a good covering in mud, so it's ideal for anyone who needs their car for every day use.

Can you please add laning against your name if you want to participate

'tis a shame for the 2 days but like you say probably a bit ambitious for Feb and we need to look after the place. if its anything like as wet as last trip out it would be more recovery than driving anyway
