Carmarthen 4x4 day 21/07/07 (or how to blow up a Sport)

Well, a short, but fun day out! Carmarthen is looking rather waterlogged.

Anything that was slightly muddy last time, is now a bog. The hills are just slippery glass. All good fun though and very educational on how to deal with different surfaces.

Now, why is Martin blaming me for the engine...

Anyone who has been there knows the drop down and up through the woods to the second field on the right. A short climb brings you either to the top of the field, or gives you the option of a right turn and through a tight track to a downhill section.

Matin was leading and got halfway up the hill before loosing traction. I parked up next to him. He tried a couple more times and failed. Cars were fishtailing totally though as there was very little traction. I reversed down the hill and backed up a good bit. Stuck it in second low and gave it some welly. Good old Defiant makes it to the top of the hill at the first attempt!

This is Matrin attempting the hill, you can see how there is no traction and the tires just fill up.

Martin tries a couple more times. I gave him the advice of trying my method (not one that is appropriate on a RoW, but fine at a Pay & Play site) which was second low and bounce it off the rev limiter. He did and got stuck. I tried pulling him up (Video, sorry about my hand, I was pulling on a bull bar!) but the sound really just said game over.

After he limped off, I went to the axle twister to get a pic

And the view from a hill. Yet another breathtaking view spoilt by the weather me thinks!

I did have a look at other sections. The field with the mud splash from last time just looked too bad to get into without another car incase of getting stuck. As it was I nearly did get stuck on the way in and out. Kinda got to the point where I had to keep going in order to get to a point where I could turn around. I got to a part where I did stop going forward, slammed it into reverse and fortunately the front wheel found enough traction to almost power slide the nose around. I used that momentum to get forward motion again and bade a hasty retreat. Just not worth getting stuck when the only back up was 1/2 a mile away with a rapidly sickening engine!

We got as far as Nantycaws Hill, then the Fronty died. That left me to tow it back to a garage. Don't think a Sport is meant to tow the weight of another Frontera, but she made the trek back to Llanelli and everyone got home in one peice. Martin is now on the lookout for a new engine. If he decides to scrap it though...I'm having first dibs on the roof bars and back box!

Cheers for lunch mate!

I think it was a pride thing after mine got up there at the first attempt...

If your talking about 'mud-splash' field, I was going along the fence line!

no im on about where you tried to climb the hill after coming through the woods, on your right theres a track that follows the fenceline.

Have been up there when it worse than that mate, especially in the winter.

All about picking the route

Oh, saw that, but as the other car blew early on, didn't even think to try it!

Next time, lets hope we have more time to explore!
