Head Gasket on B model - Advice Needed

Postby TMRFrontera on Sun Oct 22, 2017 2:03 pm

Hi all,

what a great group! I've owned a 'T' reg 2.2DTI Frontera B Sport for about 6 years now, its been a fab car. It was used as a third car, mainly for transporting the dog around and getting runs back and forth to the tip etc. Proper workhorse.

The head gasket is about to go on it, its lost a fair bit of power due to loss of compression, is losing water etc. My mate at the local garage reckons it'll be at least £450 to fix it, maybe more if something goes wrong (snapped bolts etc etc). I can still use it every day (it only does 5 miles per day).

I need advice from someone on here, my question is:
Should I:
1) Scrap it and get £100 for the car minus a reconditioned injection pump (cost me £1200 about 6000 miles ago). I reckon I could get £200 for the pump so that would make £300 in total
2) Sell it as a runner for £400 or so

I've spent the usual on it keeping it on the road so there's loads of bills for it, it's a great car and I'm loath to scrap it. What do you lot reckon? Would someone want to buy it as a runner and fix the head gasket themselves? Is there a market for this type of purchase?

Any help anyone could give would me much appreciated, it'd certainly help one of these great cars from ending up on the scrap heap..

Could you buy another one for £600, what could you buy for £600 ? You've already replaced the pump which is normally the killer blow for a DTI. If the vehicle is in fairly good nick then I would have it done. Lets face it we all know how good these old Frontys are so you know you would need to lash out at least a grand to get something else of reasonable condition and then it would always be a gamble. Better the devil you know.

I'm with mickh, better the devil you know.
At times we all ask the question "how much would I get for it? " Maybe we should be asking "what's it worth to me?"

I would get the hg replaced but wouldn't continue driving it until I had. Your looking around £400 as rhe labour is a killer plus you want it all done properly head skimmed etc. I would also replace some other bits while the head is off.

Appreciate the advice. I think I'm going to get rid of it, but I really don't want to send it to the scrapyard.

There's some rust on the front of the bonnet and it'll need a good valet and head gasket (inc. head skim etc). Do you guys reckon it'll be worth my while to put it up on Fleabay and Gumtree? I'm sure someone will want to take it on.

Thanks for that Stretch, I'll do that today. I'm so glad I can give someone else a chance to own a great car.

Fingers crossed!
