EML still won't disappear !!

Postby Pete Stewart on Thu Apr 13, 2017 3:03 pm

Hi & Happy Easter :drink:

After almost a year of repairs & ££££ I still can't get the EML light to turn off on the dash board

New Fuel Pump & Injectors - check
New injector seals (O-rings) fitted - check
New EGR valve - check
Inlet manifold clean as a whistle - check
New Vac Pipes - check
All Bleed off pipes replaced - check
Fuel drain back fixed - check
New battery & Glow plugs - check
All patience gone - check

Initially I was told (by an autospark) that my fuel injection pump had gone & that's why the engine management light is on. The car did not start from cold although it started when I sprayed 'Easy Start' into the air manifold and after driving for a few miles it would always start from warm, very smoothly ?

Thankfully the beaut is starting in the morning (which is the main thing) but the EML tells me something else is lurking & waiting to make an unwanted appearance

The only thing that I've notice for a glimmer of hope is that the glow plug ignition light does not appear - would the glow plug relay cause this problem ?

Not sure if I've just got a faulty EML sensor ?

The diagonistic machine still show fault ID - P0400 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Malfunction ?????

All ideas gratefully received

Frontera 2001 2.2 DTI LWB (100K clocked)

thanks

Pete

Yes Stretch all pipes replaced including one to the axle & T-pieces

Do you think that since the ignition coil is not showing this could be causing a malfunction (the electric circuits to the 4 plugs are ok)

The odd time the coil light shows but usually not

Probably no help at all but my 2.5 sometimes will not start as the light is flashing on the dash. I have to turn the key almost but not quite to start leave it for a couple of seconds until the flashing light goes out,and then turn it the last little bit to the start position. Then I turn the engine over and it starts.
Rifleman suggested it's a sticking relay in the computer in the passenger footwell, and I can hear an audible click as somethings happens in there before starting. I took the cover off once but put it back hurriedly as it looked omplicated in there.

............I have to turn the key almost but not quite to start leave it for a couple of seconds until the flashing light goes out.................

I've also got into the habit of waiting till all the dash lights have gone out before starting as if the key is turned too quickly it could overtake the immobilzer signal & cause starting probs

I though the audible clicks were from the glow plug relay ?? This relay is easily replaced as it slides in/out of position, no spanner work req'd (not done yet - but will in a few wks if all else settles)

Hopefully it should be ok to drive - famous last words !!

Have you had the codes read? -these are wt will be making the MIL light up..

The only code showing is the P400 which relates to the EGR which has been replaced & its neighbouring inlets cleaned to white glove standard - not sure what else to check !

any ideas ??

It might be the glowplugs relay ,but I thought it was something to do with the immobiliser.

if its running ok just rip the eml bulb out of the dash :D was the egr valve new or 2nd hand ( if new maybe its faulty )
? im not sure if you can do so on the dti but if yes why not try a blanking plate !

yeah its kinda running ok albeit not as much oomph on take-off until I get to about 60mph then its takes some stopping as you know :D

(although this may be due to the fact that I welded a portion of the exhaust back on as it had come away). I'm waiting for a full 2 months of normal driving before spending any more coin then if EML light goes out & performance picks up I'll undertake a decent overhaul (including new sidesteps & leather steering wheel)

The EGR valve & pump were 2nd hand from running frontys along with some good advice from Gregster

I may well have to tear the bulb out as MOT in a few months - what is a blanking plate ?

Its starting first time now & starting to become more reliable which is the main thing

Hi.

I was getting that fault code on our fronty, so I changed the vac pipes and the code hasn't appeared. Just maybe you may have connected a vac pipe the wrong way round or maybe accidentally split a vac pipe while fitting them.

Thanks Dave,

I'll double check all the vac pipes as they seem to be on all the fonty owners 'things to rule out in the first place'

cheers
