More and more suv's lack the low range gear and i wonder is there any new tech that compensates this.Even the Subaru Forester 2016 and 2017 seems to have those removed.Can the new high torque without low range compensate for the lack of low range ? Can a subaru forester 2016 or other brand new SUV that lack low range climb the same hills as my fronty that have only 175 NM torque.The question actually is if i buy a castrated suv can it climb the same hills as my fronty with low range ?
I would say No, the new stuff lacks out and out robustness, and is a bit too tinsel like,.......and If you can find some part that want and need It'll be a fortune
As for the Forester I had one 12 years ago so it was the old style petrol non turbo and it was unstoppable Bigger tyres and wheels are a bodywork issue, I'd say it can carry more than a frontera lwb by a fair margin
Would I buy another one? Probably not

Your everyday SUV type vehicles don't have low range, but the more dedicated 4x4's like the Isuzu D-Max, Toyota Hilux, Nissan Patrol, most Green Ovals etc etc still have low range .. or at least terrain adaptable transmission systems.
The jeep renegade car has Low range but only for Automatic transmission..I was very dissapointed to see that.For some reason i am not atracted to cars with automatic transmission.I am curious about the new Defender.LR said that they will make a more chepear version for young people...I hope it has low range too.Also LR begun to castrate many models too...Evoque ,Discovery Sport and freelander has no low range.Also they expensive to maintain vs a Jimny...They are built with fancy in mind imo.On the other hand jimny is meant to replace Samurai and is built like a full fledge offroader.The jimny looks unstable if i want to travel in large distances.
From a mentality point of view that Jimny fit my bill very well EXCEPT the size...Is too small for me. ... It is simple, tough and low range.Body on frame...Basically full option for an full fledge offroader.If it was the size of Frontera 3rd doors both the length and wider i wouldn't complain...
My Isuzu Bighorn is an auto (2H, 4H, and 4L). Love it for long journey's, towing, traffic jams, stop/start traffic, around town, green laning. I would however stick to manual in extreme off road play sites, but I don't do them so auto fits my bill fine.

The new SUV/crossovers are castrated and more expensive to maintain.Too many sensors and electronic system.In my country the manufacturers are lost really.They cut the mechanics courses abroad and i have a feeling the new SUV's are getting too complicated for services.Basically if i buy a new car i may actually have the Dacia Duster.The Jeep Renagade would have been a solution but with low range only on the most expensive version and Auto transmission is not worth it.For me the renegade price would have been worthy if it had low range otherwise is just a more expensive duster.
