2003 2.2 dti THOTTLE POSITION SENSOR fault code please help

Postby JaySpark on Fri Sep 02, 2016 9:09 pm

Hi fronty owners,

Has anybody had a similar problem that might be able to point me in the right direction?

Basically since I bought the car over a year ago, when driving at constant rpms through the range at any speed the engine loses power briefly for a second then picks up again. This had been getting worse especially when the idiling starting dipping and sometimes stalling by itself. So I took the car to a local garage as the engine management light came on and it went into safe mode. I thought they would diagnose the problem easily. They plugged it in and told me I needed a new egr valve. £240 later, it seemed to of fixed the idiling problem but the engine losing power and engine management light coming on problem still remained. So I took it back to the garage. They then told me a new fault was the Thottle position sensor. Apparently they couldn't get hold of a sensor so asked me to find a second hand one. Vauxhall will sell the whole inlet with sensor at £380 but I don't have that kinda money. Anyway I find a second hand inlet for £85. The chap told me he had no problems before. So I fitted this inlet. Still had the same fault code. So after searching a few posts on here I checked the vac pipes, which were all fine, I then replaced the camshaft sensor for a aftermarket ebay one. Still same problem. Sorry for the long post but Im hoping someone on here can point me in the direction of what to try next. I've also got a egr delete kit on its way, in a hope it might stop the inlet clogging up.

When you say checked the vac pipes do you mean full vac pressure check or just visual? As mentioned in posts on here visual inspection is not enough as it only takes a small hole to mess things up. Did you check the ones on that axle as well? It's a cheap job to do so get some hose and change the lot.

It was a visual inspection and no I haven't seen the ones by the axle. Where exactly are they?

What were the fault codes..?

The one you had may just have needed to be cleaned out..

Did they tell you the Fault Code?

What is the code reported?

You may be fixing a non-existant problem..

I would suggest that you fix your problems now, before fitting any more devices. You may make it worse.

Sorry I didn't get the codes from the mechanic, only the message. I was told the old egr was broken and the idiling has been fixed so the egr can't still be the problem. Sorry I can't give you the code's, I did ask what the codes were and he never wrote them down. It's costing me a small fortune taking it in there, so I'm trying to find the fault by trial and error reading what other posts people have put up

I have replaced the throttle position sensor on the inlet, is there another by the acceleration pedal?

It really would be far cheaper to buy yourself a diagnostic device and then ask advise for the codes you read out rather than just spending money on parts that may well be OK,

Look on ebay for "OP-COM" if you have a computer/laptop you can use with it. This device will cost you about £25 and save you hundreds or more.

Would a obd 2 fault code reader do?

no, not in the same way. you will see basic codes from a normal obd2 tool, but for the cost you would be far better getting the OP-COM.
