hi changed my cat yesterday for a new one as old one was through to the mesh, but have just been offerd a cat with a hole in outer case of maybe 1" wondered if this will affect performance of cat an wonder if i should grab it as a spare as its for free, also heard they are worth £30 scrap :?: :?:

?????????What do you mean outer casing? If you can see the cat monolith then its scrap, the cat wouldn't get upto working temp and would blow like a t**t.

cat is like cased in a thin layer of sheet metal wich has hole in through this i can see like another layer of solid metal that hasnt gone through cant see any inards :?:

It should be fine then. Its probably the heat shield which has the hole, if it faces the floor no probs. If it faces the underbody then you need to patch it

Inside the cat it normally has 3 ceramic monoliths(basically blocks) which are honeycombed. This honeycomb is coated with precious metals(which is why old cats are usually still worth some money) and when the cat reaches running temp then a chemical reaction takes place between the metals and the exhaust gases which converts most of the harmful gases to less harmful products.
