is there ment to be 2 circlips and one waher or just one circlip to hold the washer in place.?

does a circlip go round the drive shaft to hold it in place so there for the drive shaft is pulling on the unit with the spring and engaging the hub cover with the teeth. as it stand is not hitting the teeth on the cover ?

Once you've removed the 6 bolts and the end cap (and the outer body) the snap ring and washer is the next thing you need to remove in order to remove the mechanism.

If you cant see the groove where the circlip fits into, try getting a mate to push the shaft inwards through the wheel from behind the hub, it makes it a little easier, coz when trying to get the clip on, you tend to push on the shaft.

I've got two new (unused) ones here (that I no longer need)

PM me your postal address and I'll mail 'em up to you.

I lost one origonal, so bought my local VX dealers entire stock (the three shown above) - but I only ever needed 1 (I now have manual hubs with a different size circlip so these are suplus to requirements)

or get around this problem how i did

screw a bolt into the end of the drive shaft and tack weld it in place, cut its head off so its just threaded bar, then assemble all the hub

find a washer just larger than the hole you can see the drive shaft in

put that washer on and then and then put a nut on the threaded bar sticking thru the washer, gently tighten the nut to put the drive shaft into position in the hub (do not over tighten, just needs to be finger tight)

then tack the washer to the hub, and the nut to the washer (just tack weld tho so when you need to get it off a long bar and socket will break the weld)

we did this on my old sport as it kept having the circlip come off the end of the shaft when i used 4wd in anger

i'd wished i'd done it earlier as it fixed the problem completely

the washer sat where i've highlighted red

Image

(my hubs had the springs removed so they were permanently engaged so i never had a hub slip, this may not work with the autolock springs fitted, i'm sure it would work but i've not got mine to look at to check so check first)

Be aware that the end of drive shaft snap rings should be replaced once removed, as they do stretch (making them loose when refitting)

The following picture shows new snap rings above and old (removed and replaced a couple of times) below:

I just got a selection of circlips from halfrauds and fitted the best match. made re-fitting easier as I could use circlip pliers.

i phoned halfrauds and they said they dont stock them lol.
i got a set of wahsers and snap clips off a a other frontera put it all to gether and nothing front still not working  i dont know if it should be a bigger washer ? but i dont think i put the snap clip on right on one side as i could not pull it through to clip it right on. well check the morn when it light being a pain  you know if one side of the front is not cliped in right will this stop the hole front from working. so i have 2 diffrent sizes of washer very small diff but one is slitly thicker will put that one on

even without the circlip the 4wd will likely work, unless the drive shaft slips far enough back to disengage,

if it does then the drive shaft will turn without turning the front wheels, easily spotted by jacking the front and back up and putting it in gear and letting the wheels spin

the problem is that the circlip allowing the driveshaft to move back can mean the shaft strips its teeth , but also if it slips and then suddenly grabs you can often say goodbye to your front diff

Maybe there is a deeper issue here.

Jack up the front of the vehicle so both front wheels are off the ground, secure on axel stands.

Ensure 2H is selected (not 4H or 4L)

From under the vehicle, rotate the front propshaft by hand - both drive shafts should rotate

If both front driveshafts rotate, I can't understand why the front wheels don't drive - the snap ring can't be that much of an issue - can it.

If neither drive shaft turn, then I would suspect an issue with the differential.
