North Herts Green Laning Trip 21st March 2010 - Review

Postby BadBoy on Sun Mar 21, 2010 6:59 pm

Blinding day was had by all.
Big thanks go to Bobbinsjob for organising the day, and Tom for the loan of the sat nav to run MM
Was great to meet some new faces - Bushwacker, PaulMary, Tazman, and Vargus. Hope you all enjoyed yourselves.
Well done to the guys who had never been laning before. I think they all now have the bug for more. :D

Only had a chance to take a couple of photos, as we were having so much fun.

Tom & Vargus? (I think - useless with names) negotiating one of the many fords of the day

Look forward to seeing everyone else's photos, and seeing you all on the 11th at the SE off road site 8)

Well I'm glad you all enjoyed it. Big thanks to everyone for turning up and for putting up with my MM dying and having to revert back to good old map reading (big thanks to Kelly, my girlfriend, for reading the map even though she's never done it before).

We couldnt of asked for better weather for the day, the gods blessed us with beautiful sunshine all day and temps as hi as 19 degrees (that's centigrade for all the scottish members, it gets into + numbers down here  )

We split into 2 groups of 3 and 4 (Tazman unexpectedly turned up in his new truck :D ) And after a brief attempt at converting Badboys 3wd to 4wd we set off to the start of the 1st lane. It was at this point that I realised that I had done a DORIS (this has to become a well used phrase) and after buying a roof mounted video camera and putting my normal camera on charge all night, I left them both in the kitchen so only got a couple of pics on my phone. So when i work out how to get them off this bloody thing I will post them up.

The 1st half of the day was spent on some quite tame and mainly dry lanes, infact dusty at times, taking us from Just outside Stevenage across the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside over to Braughing in East Herts. It was here that we had Lunch at The Brown Bear Pub. Great food, service, and mmmmmmm cheeky bar staff lol. I can highly recommend the place.

After Lunch, we prceeded to do all the fords that cross the meanderring River Rib (dont think I'll forget looking in my rear view miiror and seeing the look of shear terror on Mary's face as she and Paul dropped into the 1st Ford  ) All the fords were very easily doable in standard trucks as I puposely left out Standon Ford as it is dangerous at the moment, even for trucks with SCUBA (something I will be contacting the council about this week)

From the wet roads we moved onto more lanes that were a bit more technical and challenging with staggered width restrictions to give the LWB's something to think about but everyone made it through with no penalty points. Then on through Bramfield Forrest and Bennington Lordship for some very rutted and (sorry) scratchy lanes, it gets worse in the summer  Ending the day at The White Lion Pub in Walkern (my local hehe).

It was great to see some new faces and as always the old ones. Many many thanks to Badboy for leading the second group. I hope for the more experienced guys there that the lanes werent too tame and boring and for the beginners, they were enough to give you the bug. It was my first time leading and hope you all enjoyed it.

Admin, can we have a rank change for Vargas to MUDFINDER as no matter how hard everyone else tried, we couldnt get muddy but his truck was covered (he must have gone off-piste when we werent looking)

Here's looking forward to next time

I did get quite muddy

And there was Paul diving from one puddle to another trying to get some filth on his truck 8)

Followed my Mary`s quote of "well it wasnt for the lack of trying" :D
