If you log in to a site using your email address, you will still be able to log into that site. You just won't receive and emails from them as it's just a user name (like you use John Boy) to log in here.
Some providers allow you to keep your email address, but they normally make a monthly charge for the privilege.

Best bet is to find a free supplier like hotmail, but these often have no spam blockers and are bombarded daily with junk. My hotmail account gets on average 20+ junk emails a day, while my BT address only gets around 1 per month, normally telling me a USPS or Fedex parcel couldn't be delivered  . My gmail account (so far) has never received any spam/junk

You'll get a new email from BT when you switch. Although iirc Plusnet is a BT business so you might be able to keep it.
As Badboy says, if you use your plusnet email address to login that won't stop you logging in , just that you won't receive communication from the site.
Anywhere that uses a username, like FOG, you'll be able to login as normal and simply update the email address on the account.

Google's gmail is a good choice of free email, I have one and it's good to have an email address that isn't tied to your ISP.

:ggod post:

I use gmail for FOG as I need to see notifications and it doesnt clog up my outlook account on my phone, I would have endless email notifications otherwise. So I just log into gmail when I want to see the FOG mails
