security centres been deactavited

Postby fogman on Tue Aug 07, 2012 11:38 am

my girlfriends sons laptop had a virus ( the name escapes me at the moment but it was something like security premium gold ) i booted it in safe mode, downloaded malwarebytes & ran a scan, the fake security pop up has gone & the laptop runs ok except for the security centre has been turned off & cant be turned back on, the a/v has obviously been disabled as well.

Had this on clients PC's loads of times.

It can be removed , but it's a fiddly pain in the proverbial.

Here's a good tutorial.

did all the above then did a file & disc check which failed to repair it so i then returned it to an earlier restore point, then re installed malewarebytes ( the earlier restore point unistalled it of course :? ) then scanned it again to make sure its clean & hey presto many hours later its all sorted, my blood pressure has of course has gone through the roof

what a cuffle thanks guys

Hi,

Glad its sorted now, but for reference you can download the stinger tool from McAfee ( free tool) that is geared up for FakeAlert type infections and is updated at least daily.

Finding suspicious files for review by McAfee
Http://getsusp.mcafee.com

System restore was a great concept, but it can also restore viruses back to the PC after the AV has deleted it!
Advice would be to disable it, backup often & update not only your operating system regularly, antivirus updates and applications like adobe, flash, Java etc.

Because the operating system is harder to break into through the front door so to speak, the virus writers find an exploit in an application like Internet Explorer/Firefox etc and use that to get higher privaleges on the computer.

Its easier to break into the house and steel the car keys than to try and bypass the security on the car directly..

Still.. glad its sorted.
