New toy for the new year perhaps??

New toy for the new year perhaps??

Postby Wilberforce on Thu Oct 06, 2011 11:14 pm

Been starting to research new phones, as my contract comes up for renewal just after Christmas, and am debating a move away from iPhone. Not because I particularly dislike it, but want something bigger.

Because of this: http://www.memory-map.co.uk/kb/questions.php?questionid=23
Yes, the folks at Memory Map hope to have an Android version out this side of Christmas.
I don't want a huge laptop on my dash, or any more gadgets than absolutely necessary, plus Windows tablets are ridiculously overpriced.
So was thinking Android tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Note, due here mid-November. Dual core CPU and plenty of RAM, and a 5.3 inch screen. Hefty for a phone, but I invariably use a headset, so that's not an issue, and that's up to satnav size screens. Plus it means less gadgets on the dash to power - rather than a phone, a satnav and a tablet or similar.

Have a search for the phone, see what you think.

Iphone for isheeple a classic case of form over function :D
If its got an i in front of it there is a better alternative to it. Android is the way forward its far more "open" to the app writing community than the corporate controlled iOs.

Havent seen an iCoffin yet missed that didnt he ..............

tbh you might be ok with a Galaxy S II they have pretty big screen res (about the same as most satnavs!) and will then work as a normal phone but if you want a tablet wait until you can find one that has Android 4.0 (Honeycomb) on it.

There is the unofficial memory map app already on Android - MM Tracker http://sites.google.com/site/mmtrackerinfo/
I've been using it now on a HTC desire for over a year without any problems, except that it's now difficult to download from Android Market if you have 2.3 upwards. I updated by phone to an unofficial version of 2.3 (from HTC) and had to repurchase it from a different source. Buy it was only £5.09 so I'm no too bothered for such a fantastic app.

If your at the picnic on sunday I'll let you have a look

Paul, Ste has I think just made me aware of that very app in his PM (you're right Ste, it was very useful).
Obviously you rather like it, and the whole experience, which is good.

Russ, I want one device, not multiple, hence my drooling over the Note. I've no need for a tablet at home, and out and about, I don't want to be worrying about having multiple gadgets to charge, etc.
As far as I can tell, the only major things I lose on Gingerbread as opposed to Honeycomb is the custom YouTube app, and a tabbed browser, which I think I can cope with.

Oh I dunno... I thought I'd never get over the demise of DOS on my computer, but I seem to have managed alright with Windows :butt:
There already is a MM app for iPhone/Pad, but as stated, I don't want a tablet, but a bigger screen than the iPhone has. Also, I like the idea of being able to tinker with my phone without incurring nthe wrath of Apple...

Another option, albeit with a slightly smaller screen, is the upcoming Samsung / Google Nexus Prime phone, which at least will have the advantage of running Ice Cream Sandwich, the very latest version of Android. Or possibly LG's LU6200, although that's slightly smaller still which gets away from the main theme of big screen.

Ho hum.

with a normal mobile you cant find your local macdonalds and get directions there. or get mithered by all your spam email wherever you are. or lose all your personal info and stuff when you leave it in a pub
