More PC problems...

Postby gregster on Tue Mar 01, 2011 11:23 pm

Getting fed up with pc's now....

Our internet connection is not brill cos we live out in the sticks...but something has slowed down massively to the point that only 3/4 of a page of stuff downloads on FOG, to get the last quarter of a page you need to refresh 5 or 6 times...
Same on our laptop on wireless as it is on the main pc which uses a wired connection to router...
gotta say fog seems to be the worst of all, ebay is pretty quick and it will stream vids of youtube without stopping and catching up...

Any ideas...cos this is driving me nuts...

I had a feeling its a recent update because mine was nice and smooth on everything (its a fairly hard core gaming computer) and now when ever I load up a new page it freezes IE for a few secs, then comes back to life and youtube vids freeze, but the audio plays, and when its fully loaded the page the video will catch up with the audio....

Might be worth clearing your Temp. Internet Files, cookies (you'l need to log back into any websites you have "remembered" passwords for though) and history. I set mine to clear everything even time I close IE just to keep it clean.

also run a speed test - http://www.speedtest.net/ OR http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ post back with the results, that'll tell us if its your internet or your computer :P

It does the same thing for me sometimes on here. I have to restart the browser session to get it to work properly.

Try clearing temp files, cookies etc as Hipo suggests. Failing that you could see if it still happens with Firefox or Chrome, might be an ie thing.

now and again my router screws up and i get slow downs, try doing a hard reset on your router, its a button on the back that you press with a pen or cocktail stick, make sure you have your username /password/routers login ip ect because you might need to set it up again. here is orange router settings.

livebox router ip http://192.168.1.1 default username and password for router login is username admin - password is admin

POP incoming mail server: pop.orangehome.co.uk
SMTP outgoing mail server: smtp.orangehome.co.uk
Don't use secure password authentication to access mail

IP address

Your IP address is allocated dynamically via DHCP- you do not need to set this. We're unable to offer a static IP address.

DNS

Domain name service is dynamic.

If Orange domain name server (DNS) addresses are required, use:

193.36.79.101 and 193.36.79.100

Dial up FTP and HTTP proxy settings

Address:http://www-cache.orangehome.co.uk:8080
Port Number: 8080

router settings

If you choose to use an Ethernet modem / router, the correct connection settings are:

encapsulation:

PPP over ATM

multiplexing method:

VC-Based

virtual circuit:

VPI=0
VCI=38

modulation:

Multi mode

authentication:

CHAP

MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit)

In case of problems with a third party router, change MTU to 1492 (Livebox default setting)

wireless

default on Livebox and Siemens router:

§ WPA-PSK

§ TKIP

§ 802.11g

§ 128 bit encrypted security key – capital letters A-Z, numbers 0-9, don’t use spaces

This might be helpful is your router plugged into your main line jack sometimes if its connected to secondary line sockets it could slow your connection down(just a thought)

You're losing your settings cos you're holding the reset button for too long which does a factory reset. You'll find unplugging the power and then plugging it back in after a few seconds reboots it without all that hassle :D

Is it browser dependant? Try in Firefox if you are using IE, as we have had a few reports of IE screwing up with FOG a little. If you've tried those, try Google Chrome as well, just to remove browser issues as a source of your problems

yes i know that reboots it,but sometimes the router locks up all together or major slowdowns and a reboot does nothing, thats why i described a hard reset not a reboot

Ok, so after getting fed up with my slow brousing in IE (firefox was nice and fast) I looked into it. It turnes out that "DivX HiQ" and "DivX Plus Web Player HTML5" are to blame for me. It must have been the update DivX asked for about a week ago, that might be your problem too greg. If it is just disable them...seems to work and havnt found any side effects yet.

Unless you dont have DivX, then this post is totaly useless :P lol

Aah, I think I see where you're coming from. In that case I would recommend a 'lumpy' reset, which involves a lump hammer and a new router  :D

(in my addled old brain a 'soft' reboot is where you tell it to reboot via the software interface and a 'hard' reboot is where you turn it off and on again)

run a speed test on www.speedtest.net and post results, also try pinging www.fronteraowners.co.uk to get an approximate round trip of packets sent, ive pinged this site and i must say it is on the slow side but not that bad to cause a problem, and considering this site is bouncing out of portugal its not to bad at all. to do a ping test goto start/all programs/accessories and click command prompt, then type in the black box ping www.fronteraowners.co.uk
then post what your average speed is.im getting Minimum = 82ms, Maximum = 82ms, Average = 82ms so that should give you a rough idea what you should be getting.
