Memory Map

Postby stevd on Tue Feb 08, 2011 3:51 pm

Hi All,

I have heard that there is software called memory maps? which shows green lanes as overlays or something?!?!? I have googled it but I am getting confused.

Can anyone give me advice on what it is I need to download and buy etc.

Many thanks

Wotcher...

There is indeed a program called Memory Map, see http://www.memory-map.co.uk/ for the official site. Essentially a computerised version of the OS maps you find in bigger bookshops, etc, so it shows all the different roads, rights of way, landmarks, etc.
The overlays come in, because it is possible to make up a route within Memory Map, or a list of key points. This can then be saved, and given to other people, or you can import things that others have done. They show on top of whichever map you're viewing (like if somebody draws a route on a sheet of overhead projector acetate, and you put that on top of your paper map) and are small files which are easy to share and switch between. If you get hold of the software, it can be put onto a PDA (like the iPAQ from HP, or the XDA which 02 used to sell, etc) for use out and about, or if it's on a laptop you could fit a relatively cheap GPS receiver. This means you can then use the device as a sat-nav, but for offroading, rather than just the roads found in TomTom units, etc. You can even get the software to create a track of your driving, if you know where you're going and want to share it.

In the past (not too sure about now though) the application was free (and came with some sample maps - lucky if you lived in those areas) then the full, proper maps, were an additional purchase.

Semi off topic but relative anyway. If I recall collectly, I believe Ian (bobbinsjob) told me the program to link my laptop to the PDA is 'ActiveSync'. Am I right? If I is, then is it a matter of downloading 'ActiveSync' onto my laptop and this inturn will allow the lappy to connect with the cheapo PDA that I bought. Is it as simply as that, or do I need a bit more IT tutorial.
I run Memory Map with a couple of 1:50,000 OS regions.

I use Activesync to syncronise my PDA (and XDA rining Windows Mobile) to my PC - phone numbers, email, calendar and MM maps.

So, yes.

And Vista, if you are running either of these you can just plug in the PDA as long as the Windows Mobile version isn't too old IIRC

Don't want to hijack steves thread even further, but my Sat Nav has Windows CE as it's OS, so can I just MM onto that and use the inbuilt GPS receiver ?

Yes, you may need to find a boot loader for it, so when you turn it on you can choose what to load up. My windows phone runs WinMo 6.5 Pro (CE OS 5.2.21869). And MM runs perfect on that. so my answer to you is yes :)

EDIT: Just thought tho...Sat Navs normaly have wide screen landscape....PDAs and phones are portrait, so I dont know what it'll do about that tho...try it and find out :)

Just popping out the memory card with Tom Tom software on it will make it boot to Win CE, so I don't think that will be an issue. I would imagine that I could just put MM on a new card and boot it up

Wow, I had an old windows mobile phone which I dont use as I couldnt use it basically, it was way tooo complicated, but I am sure it did have sat nav built in and had a big screen, so when I get my head around all the tech, I guess i could use that right?? Alternatively I have an Iphone whioch I find easier to use, will that work in the same way? or does it have to be windows?

Yep, connect it via the USB port though, not wifi. That phone has the same (almost) spec as mine(speed, ram, ect), apart from it has winmo7 (newer then mine). The fact it has no SD card shouldnt be a problem because when you install it on the phone because it askes if I wanted to install it to main memory or the card. Only thing to worry about it that mine cant open maps that are larger than about 300 - 350MBs....so Ive used the "Send Visible Map Portion" option with the map fully zoomed out to include the areas you want (you can zome back in once its sent to your phone).
