Oh, and no disrespect Greg, but I wouldn't touch Norton (or McAfee) with a 100ft bargepole.

I had norton once and what a bugger to remove it was in everything like its own mini virus, it just didnt want to leave and its true the older versions at least where very very bloated and killed performance.

No anti virus is infallible Greg. If Anti virus products could remove all virus's I wouldn't have a job. There are things that AVG will do better than Norton and vice versa. There is no magical product that does it all I'm afraid.

Norton, in my opinion is bloated and resource hungry, even in the later incarnations. Ste is right that it can be a pain to get rid of every last little bit of it. They even do a removal tool , but even that doesn't clear it all. McAfee is even worse! Google Symnrt.exe and MCPR.exe for the tools if anyone's interested.

If I were to pay for an A/V is would be Nod32, if I wanted a very capable free A/V I would choose Avast. I have installed Avast on every PC I have had my hands on in the last 7 years , unless someone specifically asked for something else. I have never had a complaint.

Cheers for that guys....will go for avast then and spend the £30 odd quid on another removable HD to back up to...

So avast is deffo preferable to avg....does avg de-install ok, or is there any useful tips you could help with?

Thanks again

If you are worried Greg run periodic scans using this http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php , just remember to always update before you run it (it's free)

AVG should uninstall OK and there are removal tools, but I doubt they would be necessary unless you had errors elsewhere stopping a normal un-install. I would also recommend you download Cr4p Cleaner - http://www.piriform.com/ . Once you have uninstalled AVG (or any other software for that matter) run the registry element of the program and the standard cleaner to remove anything left behind.

You should run Cr4p Cleaner once a month or so and it will remove all temps/cookies etc etc etc that we accumulate everyday surfing the WWW.

Free AGV will just dissapear from normal uninstall.

Have you any old laptops or hard internal hard drives knocking around?
If so get one of these docks for £15 and use you old drives for storage 8)

Roo, sorry I didn't read your original post properly.

Are you 1000% sure that it was AVG that told you that you had 700 errors and it could only fix 100 ? The reason I ask is that A:) As far as I am aware AVG doesn't operate on that basis, and B:) The error message you describe is very reminiscent of a rogue anti virus program that is doing the rounds at the moment.

Please confirm (don't assume) which program is telling you have all these errors etc

Huggy's instructions to get the system info are correct, however another way to get the same info is to Click Start , then Click Control Panel, then double click on the System icon.

ye that 700 errors sounds like that malware crap that multiplys all over the place and is a bitch to remove, antivirus 2009 and now antivirus 2010,has many other names but cant remember them, malwarebytes will remove it in most cases but ive had a few pc's to repair that malwarebytes removes but once you reboot it comes back, you need to boot into safe mode then it takes alot of hunting in hidden files and registry to remove it,my mates kids keep infecting his pc all the time with this,he has avast installed but the kids choose to ignore the warnings,it also disables alt/ctrl/del and msconfig sometimes which is then near impossible to repair, much quicker to grab the recovery disc lol.

I,Ve never had a problem removing it to be honest, but I agree it needs to removed manualy to complete a proper repair as it does get everywhere.

Anyway I won't get into this too much further as I don't want Roo reading this and having a heart attack :/

Aww Thanks very much Ste, that would be great :D , yeah think it would be easier as you know me  ermm I don't have a dongle sorry  and I am not with BT account so can not connect to that, works even when your not at home.... Does it have to be connected to the internet to get rid of unwanted files etc please?..
on Vista It had TOOLS , and I could click that and it would get rid of temporary files etc, but on windows 7 I cant seem to find tools anywhere

But the :D plus side I ran avast and it said I dont have any probs with my lappy so dunno :?

Thanks again Ste
