They don't...
Some fluctuations in speed are to be expected if you take readings every few minutes, due to the actions of everybody else who you share bandwidth with, the amount of data being transferred to and from the test server, etc...

About the only speed difference you'll get off different browsers will come down to how much system resources they consume, and how quickly they can render the data received.

Rural France.
Loads of time to eat, drink and make merry.
I'll just go and "Pluck the Christmas Turkey" while the page downloads.

Hi, to all people with low download figures, dont automatically run speedtest with the recommended server. Try several and see what you get, for example Manchester server is approx 12 miles from me but I get less than 1Mb most of the time with a ping of 190-200 ms. Yet when I test with milton Keynes or Maidenhead I get 6.5-7.0 Mb with a ping of 40-50ms. Bit of a difference eh!. It appears that the nearest server isnt always the best. Until about 2 years ago the Faroe isles server gave me the best results! .
So whats the correct result? after all all these servers are hosts for speedtest and anyone meeting the specs can apply to be a host. This doesnt mean your browsing comes from there.
Can any of the IT specialists shed some light on this?

Try here in order to test your 50Mb speed I would suggest using the site gamefiles.virginmedia.com - If you download 4 large files all at once and add the download speeds together, then multiply the speeds by 8, you will get your total download speed in megabits.

Just a quick post to let you know that my super fast BT Infinity broadband has broken.

I've been off the air since last Wednesday, but a replacement hub delivered this coming Tuesday/Wednesday should see me back on line shortly.

I'm a little limited in what I can do through this connection at work though.

Back soon.
